I think this is a pretty good deal, as Red Pocket has some pretty good plans so the year is not a big deal imho. I'd probably do it if I didn't already have a plan and an iPhone 11.

This is worse than previous promotion for those on annual plan. Previous one requires one month service if you have annual plan.

If I switch to an annual plan (from Ebay) after 3 months, will this affect unlock after 12 months of service? Or do I have to stick to a monthly plan for 12 months to get it unlocked?

People who buy redpocket phones actually use them with cheap redpocket plans especially the cheap ebay annual plans. They don't switch to other more expensive carrier monthly plans. Metro is another option but their unlock policy is 6 months.

The reasoning for 6-12 months unlock policy is because they want people to USE their service. They don't want people to just buy to get a big discounted phone and never use the service or sell to some ebay unlocked flippers.

Of course it has everything to do with their discount! Apple phones don't get discounted by Apple. Apple would rather destroy them than discount them. If red pocket is giving you $300 off, they are eating $300. It is very reasonable for them to expect you to actually buy some service from them in order to get that discount. Expecting a massive discount and then being able to quickly flip to another carrier is a very entitled mentality.
