$149.99 after using the listed promo code FTPBU8562

Seems like a pretty good deal, strong 12th gen i5, 6 core 12 threads. Unsure how long the deal will be going for, I don't see any sale end date. Thought I'd let y'all know about this since I haven't seen it posted when I tried searching beforehand. Compatible with cheap ddr4 and ddr4 mobos. Good for gaming. Not the best in the world, but cheap, and effective in gaming. The F means no integrated graphics meaning you'll need a dedicated GPU for this cpu.

At $25 less than the 5600X, this should generally be a no brainer for new budget builds.... BUT! Are there any sub-$100 LGA 1700 motherboards that aren't garbage?
The i5-12400 using the Intel Box Cooler: Laminar RM1 does not exceed 81°C in a closed chassis during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://videocardz.com/newz/intel...rd-chassis and 80°C for https://www.techspot.com/review/2...-i5-12400/

The 5600X using the Wraith Stealth air cooler peaks at 95°C during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...3-review/2
definitely need to factor in overall platform cost including mobo/memory and not just the processor. also, thought i read somewhere the stock intel cpu cooler is quite a bit inferior when compared to AMD so that could be additional cost.

I prefer to from the BIOS, but more power to you.

Agreed. Mobo and fan seem to be two places Intel nabs ya. I am like 5yrs into the same AM4 mobo, which was relatively cheap at the time, and I just keep popping in processors. AM4 is finally coming to an end this year with the next batch of PCs, but I can't really complain...I have updated CPU three times in the same old board. Sure, I miss a few features of the new ones, but I'm not significantly bottlenecked, and it sure is sweet to just spend 10min dropping in a CPU and calling it done.
Was it really that much of an upgrade to swap amd cpus 3 times in that space of time?

I got a 2700x and while the 5700x is definitely an upgrade, it's not a head and shoulders above upgrade (from what I'm looking at). when I upgrade I usually jump many generations, but obviously that means the whole system is being replaced.

I have a 10400f now, on a z590 board; this seems cheap enough but would I notice a difference?

Edit: Nvm, just noticed it's 1700 so I'd need a new board too
That's one of the downsides with Intel, you need a new motherboard every gen or two. With AMD, I'm still running the same mobo on one of builds since my 1600 back in 2018. Yeah I don't have certain features new boards have but it's saved me hundreds in the process.

Funny for CPU bound games like CS GO, I saw a 20-25% increase from a 3600 to a 5600X. The IPC improvements were substantial. YMMV depending which applications you use.

People are complaining about having to update their motherboard? For my last few upgrades - the new motherboard features has been the most useful parts to upgrade!

More USB ports, more USB C, better sound chips, fast and more M.2 ports, etc. I honestly enjoyed the motherboard upgrades as equally as the processor improvements - which honestly aren't that impressive for 95% of people's workloads.

I do a good bit of encoding/compiling, so it's useful for me. I also enjoy tinkering, so it scratches the itch, and the resale value of the old CPUs was great. For my last CPU, I think I spent $160 on a Ryzen 5 3600. It was a nice speed boost.

I guess my MB needs really haven't changed in 5yrs. I can't tell the difference in the audio chips, I don't need more than 7 USB devices, and I just use an M2 boot drive and spinning storage.

Clock multiplier is locked, but you can overclock by adjusting the base clock. Caveat is that you need a pretty expensive Z690 mobo with DDR5 for now, but sub-$200 B660 boards supposedly in the works. Do a Google search for "BCLK overclocking". Might as well take the $100 for DDR5 and put it toward a 12600K.

Actually, overclocking from the BIOS gives more power to the CPU.

It's not the hardware side, it's the software side. I upgraded my CPU a few times in another machine and it didn't effect anything. When I upgraded the whole system, it caused all sorts of issues. I ended up having to reinstall software + plug-ins + security keys for weeks on end. Even some external hardware no longer worked correctly with the new system. It still doesn't.

I dread everytime I completely upgrade. It's a pita. If your just playing video games and don't have tons of licensed productivity and media software, that's a different story.

I hear you. I currently own Z97 build containing a i7-4770K+1070, but I have since repurposed that PC and upgraded to a R7-5800X+1080Ti. After a while, I started to realize that having only 4-cores can be limiting and a bottleneck for CPU intensive tasks like converting different video formats. Guess you must be waiting for the right time to upgrade.

Yeah, I'm going to have to buy ram/mobo/cpu that adds up quick!

So what? I'm pretty sure you saved up enough since that Z87/Z97 platform released around 9 years ago. You wouldn't be a bargain hunter if you weren't a member of Slickdeals would you?

I just bought a 12700kf, is it worth overclocking for using on heavy loads?

Toms hardware said only a 4% improvement with significant heat problems.

Not realistic in this case, so yes, infinitely more power if possible via software overlock.
