As much as I use Mac as my primary OS for laptops. Why is this a bad deal? Ryzen 7 58XX series? (Is it not the same as desktop just a strained down a bit?)

16GB DDR4 @ 3200 speed?

Mobile GPU probably isn't the best but it's on a 1080p IPS display.

On paper for less than $700, isn't this a deal?

There is a downvote at my time of writing this
The display is pretty dim but overall I agree, it's a decent price for what appears to be good computer.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 14" laptop refurbished for $510 is a great deal - the screen will be so much better than this HP.

I bought similar HP laptop from Costco for $549 - same config not sure about model. I love this laptop except for the backlit keyboard. The silver keys with white backlit doesn't work well. Other thing I miss is the fingerprint reader. I mainly use it for work and it is lightweight and battery life is about 4 hours.
Yes, silver keyboard with white light backlight (not sure if any other color would work) is self-defeating. I just turn on the room light with mine.

The Ryzen 5000 series mobile CPUs are based off of Ryzen 3000 series desktop CPU architecture. I really dislike AMDs mobile CPU naming scheme for this reason. It's still a great laptop CPU, though, with much better battery life than what Intel offers, and the integrated GPU is still better than Intel's 12th gen.

To be fair, AMD's Ryzen desktop isn't in the clear here either.

There are chips in the newer series that were disguised and using older or different architecture - typically in the mid to lower range.

There is a case of it being reversed with the famous 1600AF chip, but that's the only one I know about in the positive direction.

Also, Intel has gotten A LOT more confusing recently on their mobile CPUs too. An example is the 1155G7 and the 11300H. Both are i5s, both are tiger lake. The 5 digit number follows the traditional naming scheme more and the letter denotes a specialty of the chip (usually some form of low power, but K were unlocked for example). On the 1155G7, the letter on that denotes the integrated graphics and the level of it with the last number.

To add to the above, the G# is only for their newer integrated graphics. The 11300H has an iGPU too, it's just not as good, I guess? And with the 11300H for example, there's also the HQ designation. I don't think this is really used now, but it was high performance quad core... which the 113500H is a quad core chip.

Sorry for the long rant... more just talking to myself. I'd say the only consistent naming scheme has been for the core i series on desktop for a decade now.

Dim display, weak battery, silver keyboard, too many known HP hinge problems (can't say that applies here, but hard to know which it doesn't apply to anymore). Yes, decent CPU and RAM, though vega7 is weak as Ryzen iGPUs go.

5825U is Vega 8

Why would I buy this instead of this equivalent HP laptop which is roughly the same price?

Would be nice if it was powered by type c port

It is...that's what power delivery is. Also most if not all laptops have a barrel plug to usb-c converter cable on amazon, just search for the barrel diameter, usually 4.5mm or 5.5mm
