Not sure what you mean by this. I don't think the ad card is encrypted. You can watch the footage in the kasa app just fine and you can also pull it out and look at it on your computer, they're just mp4 files, as I recall. There are no features of the doorbell behind a pay wall. The only service the sub offers is cloud storage but you don't need it with the SD card. All the kasa stuff works with Google. I can tell Google to "stream doorbell to TV" and it works.

Okay so no one is giving super solid technical specs on here to help others so here goes:

According to Consumer Reports, this scored a 68, behind Logitech Circle (81), Google Nest (70), Eufy 2k dual wired (new model) (74), and Lorex (73) just to name a top few.

The areas it did poorer in compared to the others was video quality (3/5), data privacy (2/5). But response time was good (5/5).

The biggest drawbacks are as follows:

- No HDR
- No Geofencing
- No facial recognition
- No 2 factor authentication
- No automatic firmware updates
- No color night vision
- Does not play recorded messages when not answered
- Claims resolution is slightly lower 2k compared to others (this has 2304x1296p vs. 2560x1920p)

Anyways, for the price it's pretty good hence the 68. But these doorbells have gotten quite a bit better in just last few years so spending another $100 or so more to get a sale/Prime Day deal on a doorbell with HDR, color night vision, etc. is worth it.

Hopefully this helps others make a better informed decision if they're on the fence.

Just watched a youtube review.. The SD card is encrypted and it needs to be removed to watch on the app.. Many features behind a pay wall too.. No google suport either. Arg.. Not what I was looking for.

does this require internet to work or can it work solely off the local network?

Seems a bit useless to have the SD card in the camera mounted outside rather than inside the house?

Can this doorbell be connected to a google smart display so that live feed can be displayed once the bell is pressed?

This review talks about the paywall in order to do basic functions.

That was my first reaction. But at least the recordings being saved would never depend on the Wi-Fi connection.

I got to thinking I could just screen record anything I wanted to keep on my phone, from the app, if that works. It would be very rare that I'd actually need to save a video clip, and I wouldn't wanna have to go take the SD card out just to do that.

From the video in the previous post screen recording seems possible. But it's crazy that the SD card is encrypted.

Also some other significant issues about 3:30 onward in the YouTube video.

Was wondering the same thing. Seems like it kinda defeats the purpose if someone can just take the SD card, unless there's something I'm not understanding

I simply googled "Kasa Smart 2K Doorbell" and the first review (7:51 long) gives the info I was talking about.. IDK, because I never had one, but based on that review, I would wait for a Eufy.. If the deal is dead it is all for naught.. I want a doorbell but it must be snappy and not have a subscription service. The review convinced me I dont want this one.
I have a Eufy 2k battery with Homebase; Picture is good and no monthly charges. But the thing is damn slow to start streaming to it's app or to a larger screen

You have to pay a subscription fee to download footage to a device. The SD card is encrypted, so playback on a computer is not possible.

I have asked this same question before and it comes down to whether you value privacy more than security. Basically live in a safe neighborhood where chances of break-ins and thus possibly losing the doorbell is very unlikely. There is no right or wrong answer, only your own preference.

I'm in the second category but still prefer having cloud recording for the "just in case" scenario so I have Nest Hello and a subscription for 24/7 recording.

Since this thread started I looked at a few more"current" reviews.. In those they complaign about that lag too.. I guess I wait another generation to see if the bugs can get Ironed out. They all seem to have at least one major flaw that I would have a issue with, and I do not want a subscription deal either.. I am always close to that data cap.

A lot of these reviews report, that the "Lag" was mainly a problem while on mobile data and not as bad on the home network where the doorbell and app device are on the same SSID wifi Network. That is where I would think the Eufy would shine, but after more reviews I feel I need to wait.. Possibly a 5g phone would cure the lag issues.. IDK.. I need it to work for a 83yr old. Flakey audio and slow vid will cause more problems than the one I want to cure..

It has to work smooth and clear, and the reviews I looked at today made me aware that It might not be something that is refined enough just yet for the tech challenged and or hard of hearing... Alexa can turn lights on and off, but when a switch, bulb or any thing goes out the crap hits the fan.. Door bell not ringing or a app not popping up on the Iphone would lead to sleepless nights and continual testing to make sure it is working...
