A great machine but you need to know what you're doing.

Tl;dr from last post:

-this does not aerate. Aeration =/= dethatching
-best done in the fall, but can be done in other seasons... Just beware as this will undo any preemergent herbicides (crabgrass esp) that you applied
-don't bother with the included bag. Use mower to pick up thatch
-thatch is not mulch... Throw it out!
-need 15 amp extension cord. Don't cheap out.
-you can use the prescribed depth recommendations for the tines, but in truth, any will work.
-this Inc. A scarifier attachment, which the greenworks does not. It's basically a more hardcore dethatching tool... Minimal aeration benefit
-keep the box for any possible warranty exchange... Service is good but you need to mail machine back
-certain grasses don't like dethatchers
I don't water my lawn…
I mow when I have to…
I may have raked two or three times in the 23 years I've lived here…

Why did I just impulse buy this?
Unless you have a tiny lawn, you're gonna have a bad time with this. Basically, any corded lawn tool should be a non-starter unless you only have to use it in a very small section. Moving around your entire lawn with long extension cords, having to rake up the thatch later....I did less than 1/3 of my 15k lawn with this and gave up - just rent a gas one if you really need to dethatch.

Same price as the latest OOS deal but nonetheless a good deal. Previous post for all the comments:

"power raking" or "dethatching" is so rarely required for a lawn. Not recommended in the spring as you damage tender spring growth. Most experts recommend core aeration early fall instead.

Agreed - these thing are so often recommended on the fb yard groups and very rarely do people actually need to do it. I think they are just drawn to the fact that it's relatively inexpensive and it's something to do for this 'hobby."

Maintaining a healthy lawn is a process and requires a yearly schedule to get it done right and correct other issues (heat, too much water etc).

A few things I do on a rotating yearly basis is to overseed the lawn every 2-3 years and in doing so I try to dethatch and aerate both right before over-seeding to get the best results.

So realistically you are only doing this every 2-3 years unless you need to patch certain areas.

If you already have a compatible amp and length cord(s) its not that bad and on a 1/3 acre I've done this and takes 2 days. 1 to run this and get all the grass out and then to slowly go back and rake up the grass. If you have a lawnmower its a lot easier as you can bag the raked up grass....have to do this in the fall and make sure its dry and the grass isnt emerging and largely dormant but not frozen ground.

I'm in PNW and used this tool to remove moss in my lawn. Took me just an hour to remove tons of bags moss for my 1000 sf lawn.

Last year I manually raked the moss for 10+ hours.

the cost tradeoff is worth it the hassle of renting a gas powered unit in my opinion. .3 acres here. and used this thing for 2 seasons already. can't complain at all. I use a leafblower to blow all of my thatch into the woods. some people may not be able to do this though.
