They're going to ask*, so here it is:
Standard Memory 8 GB
Maximum Memory 24 GB
Memory Technology DDR4 SDRAM
Number of Total Memory Slots 2

*1. is ram soldered?
2. is ram expandable?
3. can I upgrade the ram?

Good to get for a kid going to college? Was thinking of getting her the $399 asus 14" with i3 intel core processor that is going on sale at Sams in a couple days. I don't have a clue and she don't care as long as she has one for her schoolwork.
This is WAY better than the i3 14". It's a 4 core 7nm Ryzen, and has hyper threading, so 8 threads. 8GB of memory is probably enough for school, or for literally $25 you can grab a second 8GB chip and the thing will run significantly faster. 256GB SSD is also plenty for school. Just switch it out of "s mode" (a Google search and 10 minutes) before giving it to her. It's really too powerful to be in S mode.

More like 10 seconds. Doesn't even require a reboot.

Is better and has four cores and these go on sale a lot.

The Sams Club one https://versus.com/en/amd-ryzen-3...-i3-1125g4
The Passmark is much slower on multi cores but better single core and overall better.

Not sure you should just pay attention to Passmark..

This is a great processor but more inline with 10th gen Intel chips. It is better than many of them. This should be plenty fast enough for most things even light gaming.

This is roughly $385 ish after 6% ebay CB and 12% off in cart.

400 nits screen, very light and portable, PD charging, thunderbolt, whisper quiet and 2 yr allstate warranty. Memory not upgradable. Keyboard is chiclet but it is backlit.

for a kid going off to college, I feel like the screen and weight are more important than the 8GB of memory limit. I havent been able to find all of the above with PD charging for $380. Everyone is different and some have different priorities than others. I will send my kid with a big display to plug into and a nice backlit keyboard to plug into in the dorm room.

It could not be easier to switch out of S mode. If you don't know how to do it, Google it. It literally takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

It's trivial to move it out of Windows S mode. Takes less than a minute. Link to process [howtogeek.com].

I know the ram isn't soldered on this, but just out of curiosity, how much would a repair guy charge to unsolder and solder on a larger stick of RAM?

I am getting this instead of the refurb Acer 3350u, 128GB SSD, and 4GB ram. For $120 more, I am getting 2x CPU performance (multi-threads), 2 x ram, and 2x ssd. Plus I don't have to open up the laptop to upgrade the ram.
