There's a lot of folks here that don't know their tech. So I should clarify.

As far as Intel's ultrabook "U" processors:

The 7th gen was dual core and is pretty inadequate in 2022.

There is nearly no difference in CPU or GPU performance between 8th Release 1 (8250U), 8th Release 2 (8265U), and 10th Gen (10210U) processors. They are 99.9% the same processors with different clock speeds, trading increasing heat for VERY slightly greater performance due to the lack of tech (process) advancements on Intel's part. The 10th gen CPUs are known for running quite hot. 8th-10th gen also had crappy graphics.

The 11th gen is where laptops got a large CPU+GPU boost, especially on the graphics side with Xe.

Unless you are doing something graphic intensive such as gaming, a quad core 8th-10th gen CPU should be more than adequate these days for basic use (web browser, youtube, office applications.

You can't possibly be serious and knowledgeable if you're comparing a 17" laptop that HP didn't even bother to give a name or an SSD (in 2021) to, to a Latitude 7000 series laptop.

I found this deal in 2 seconds, it even seems to come with a 2 yr warranty:

17.3" screen though. Great for those looking for a bigger laptop, but those looking at this deal probably want something portable / lighter.

5400RPM HDD = Blah. Automatically add $50+ to the cost of that laptop.

14" chassis, so no numpad. Reviews indicate no ethernet port, too.

This 8th gen CPU has twice as many cores/threads as an i3 1115G4, yet only achieves parity in multi-threaded work (6,239 Passmark score). The 11th-gen i3 also has notably better single-core performance. So that's a bit of a drag.

I couldn't find any information in the product listing as to whether or not the keyboard is backlit, but this was a premium offering in its day, so I imagine it is backlit. I would imagine the screen is also decent too.

For $300 and considering it has 16GB of RAM, I'd say it's a pretty good deal.

Edit: Not to mention the very sturdy build quality.

My 7th gen i7 laptop with 16gb ram and SSD is struggling hard in 2022. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable recommending an 8th gen i5 laptop.
it's also officially obsolete next year if you're on windows. given that everyone's abandoning the hardware affected by spectre, it's reasonable that OSS will follow suit.

That said, yeah, 8th gen is pretty dated. I'm one to recommend business laptops but the difference between 8th gen and 11th is absolutely massive. The 11th has massively better performance and much better battery life too.

Your 7th-gen Core i7 is a dual-core (assuming U-series processor found in most laptops); the quad-core 8th-gen in this has about double the performance [cpubenchmark.net].
