Imho, the M1 air at the 999 (and sale price of 8-850) was a good deal, but it's too hard to excuse 8/256 in a $1300 laptop.
I will be completely honest in saying that while using my MacBook or Dell XPS laptop, I don't notice that one is any better (performance-wise) than the other. They run different OS's but the MacBook definitely isn't night/day better than the Dell or vice versa.
With regards to minimal RAM and swap to SSD, we'll see how the SSD wear is on that Mac SSD in a few years vs a system with 16/32GB RAM, where swap to disk is minimal. And while SSD is fast, RAM is magnitudes faster.
Having the flexibility to upgrade RAM or SSD is great. Buy small, pay less to upgrade yourself compared to giving Apple 10X more money for the same thing and having it fixed in there for life.

Now, the aspect of pricing is totally true, but this is typical Apple. If people continue to buying why change their strategy? This product forces you to buy the base model and be fine with worse drive speeds even though it still isn't horrible or factor in forking out a lot more money for a m1 pro, because an upgraded m2 air gets pretty damn close to those prices. That is an issue, but sorry was someone who owns a windows laptop, m1 air, and a decked-out gaming PC. For most laptop users, m1 air and m2 air can easily beat their competition within its class.
Reality is that 90%+ of users just use their laptops for surfing the web, typing documents, or checking email. Performance really doesn't matter there as paper benchmarks aren't going to have a major effect on the end user's perception of performance. Hell, I do half of my work on a Window11 VM, running on an Intel 8500T, where I've allocated 2.5 cores (5 threads) and 12GB of RAM.
Look, I like my M1 MacBook Pro 13. But I bought it used with AppleCare+ for 16/1TB for $1300. New, that combo would have been $2200-2400 or so, and frankly, it's not worth that.
Even if you have to spend more, if doing that helps you be able to use that computer for a lot longer, then it saves you more in the long run, and you got to have a better computer during that time!
Of course, if you could find discounts on the upgraded versions, then that would be ideal!

As for the M1 processor, it brings a lot of value, too, but I'm hesitant to buy Apple's first version of anything, especially considering that I usually keep my computers for a very long time!
(I'm currently dragging my upgraded mid-2012 MacBook Air on its last legs! 😂)
I'm tempted to buy an upgraded M2 Air, especially if I can get a great deal on it, but I'm really trying to hold out for the fall, when they will hopefully announce new M2 MacBook Pros!
And in that case, 1400 dollars can buy you any top notch laptop.
