More like Nutella than pretzel. They're a bit like very thin breadsticks that can break and are easy to chew.

They're a good little snack for kids, but it takes several packs to equal the same amount that comes in a regular box. We got the Strawberry Cream last time and there were just 7 sticks in each package, whereas I think there are about 20 to a box.

Just tried these recently (the Cookies & Cream from a deal here.)

My immediate impression was that the amount of packaging waste from these is pretty crazy. They really need to come up something better (and I almost never pay attention to this, save for when Amazon puts a pack of gum in a refrigerator sized box for no good reason.)

And, like many have mentioned, these things are fragile. So far, 2-4 sticks per package are usually broken and/or stuck to another stick (and will break if you try to separate them.)

Personally, I think the cookie stick could stand to be significantly thicker, for taste, durability, and satisfaction.

It's almost like they tried to figure out how to create the most fragile cookie ever using the most packaging per ounce possible.

Mission accomplished!

That said, they taste pretty good.

Check out giant box of pocky. Each stick is individually wrap.

FWIW we eat these quite a bit - between Costco, and my brother who lives in Tokyo. I am not a particularly picky eater, but I thought the cookies and cream were super gross. Every other flavor I've tried has been fine. The best I've ever had is the salted vanilla, if you can find it!

When did "Asian" snacks become more mainstream? 10-15 plus yrs ago it would be rare to see non Asians having boba, rice crackers, pocky sticks, hello panda cookies, etc. These were mainly bought at local Asian grocery stores at the time. Same with Mitchell's or magnolia ice cream with mango, ube coconut flavors. I think with TikTok, youtube mukbangs more people have been exposed to other cultures foods and snacks, that's probably part of it.
Few other reasons (that I see personally) in addition to what holysin pointed out:

Anime - some are "slice of life" and so commonly feature typical Japanese/Asian foods including treats and specific products. Even some cars can be distinguished in some anime, even where the car isn't that important.

Influx of other cultures - Reflecting on my early elementary, and my family's school experience today, I see a lot of similarities with the supposed school experience portrayed in that style of anime. Uniforms, staying with the same classmates from 1-12, competition between different classrooms, and school trips to islands and other cities. Additionally, some of the styles of snacks that are just recently becoming available here in the US were ones which I had as a kid 30+ years ago.

EEK! OK, so I got on a rant. You don't have to read the rest, but I'm not erasing it in case it brings back memories for someone....

It seemed that we were a bit more connected to Asian-style of things back then than we were to US things. I remember a video shown during school about squid fishing in Japan, this was in 3rd grade, something about jobs/careers. Now everyone seems to be willing to give up a kidney to be exactly like a kardashian or rapper. This is an island in the Caribbean by the way.

I'm sure it's not just my nation. Asian-inspired cartoons and Anime were available in most of central and south America, as well as Spain, Portugal, and Italy at least as far back as the early 80s based on some friends I have talked to that grew up watching some of the same things I did. We'd get a Meteoro (Speed Racer) or Mazinger or Candy Candy toy or tv promotion here and there. Heck, my mom watched Kimba, La Princessa Caballero, and some other one that I also watched as a kid (I thought it was Fantasmagorico, but maybe it was a clone of it or maybe she watched it and I watched something similar) Most of what was available back then wouldn't have had a direct food influence, but it opened us up to the culture. I've had friends bring back bags full of Japanese and Taiwanese treats (a lot of inedible things to our palates) in the early 2000s. We had an Asian part of town in Orlando, so we were enjoying a lot of these things in the late 90s too. Back in NY, we played with the asian kids (for me, primarily Korean) so we got to sample their food at home.

It all depends on what part of the US, and what cultures are available. But with the internet, I think that the mixing of cultures is only going to keep speeding up in all but the most xenophobic and/or poorer communities.

Bye now! Wave

To add to what others already said, my impression is that it started on the coasts (California & New York specifically) & then spread out slowly until social media got a hold of it. Now local & semi-local grocery stores have some Asian snacks (usually the ones you mentioned) in my area but occasionally carry "obscure" stuff that you'd only find in a "mystery box" of Asian foods. Plus if you have a World Market or similar near you, they have an Asian section that always has various candies if nothing else. Still, the local Asian markets have the best stuff and it tends to be fresher (at least in my area).

It would pass eventually even without artificial flavors.

Been 85 and humid here, three packages of the cookies and cream and not melting. However the chocolate ones would probably melt more in the heat, real chocolate melts at 96.

I would like the Asian Kit Kat flavours to become more mainstream.
