It's called convenience. People pay money for it in the right scenarios. Those scenarios and how much people pay are individual. Not that this is good basmati, but if it were, it'd be $2-3/lb. That would make this $6.60-$9.90. This is either cheaper or less than $3 more for something cooked and spiced you can eat immediately with no time measuring, cooking, cleaning, portioning and cleaning a bowl.

Personally, I have a pack of TastyBite Madras Lentils around to reduce the numbers of times my wife and I purchase lunch when working when meal prep has run out or wasn't timed well or we're tired. This is not absurdly expensive.
