I wrote this in the previous thread, it was voted helpful so including it here again:

I got this laptop late last year for a family member and also use it quite a bit myself. For $345 I think it's impossible to beat as a general-purpose laptop; this is better than many $500 "deals" I see on SD. The quad-core i3-1125G4 CPU is as fast as the i5 and i7 equivalents [cpubenchmark.net](which also only have 4 cores). The other pluses for me:

Good build quality - this has similar materials and feels a bit more solid than the 7000-series convertible I just got (7425), which has more keyboard flex
Decent screen for the price - mediocre color coverage, but far better contrast and viewing angles than TN screens you usually see at this price
Good port selection and full-service USB-C
Upgradability with 2 SODIMM slots, 1 of them free
Reliable Intel wifi chip (I can't stand the flaky Realtek chips found on many cheap laptops)
Good battery life thanks to fairly large battery
Good keyboard feel (decent amount of travel and a good balance between cushiness and tactility); unlike many HPs and older Dells with silver keys, the lettering is legible
Above-average speakers
Nice "quality of life" features like backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader built into power button
Quiet fan

The only real downside is that it runs fairly hot on the bottom, so not great for on-lap use. But the upper side doens't get very warm. Also, Dell's Power Manager (download from Windows Store) has thermal profiles, allowing you to choose more performance, less noise, or less heat. It also lets you set charging thresholds, e.g., to keep your battery below 100% to optimize battery health - very useful if you mostly use this plugged in.

Here's a YouTube review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1BydFwlGPw, just keep in mind the review model has the 300 nit rather than 250 nit display.

That's a review (from 2020) of a much older model, before the Inspiron 5000 series got a big upgrade in design and build quality. Pretty much none of it applies to this 5410.

Performance is similar although the Acer will run cooler because of Ryzen and larger chassis. However, it's quite a bit heavier, and lacks the full-service USB-C, backlit keyboard, and fingerprint reader on the Dell. It's also not clear whether the screen on the Acer is IPS or TN. For me the Dell is easily the better buy.
my research shows "comfy view" is not IPS. =(, but I will use a monitor anyways.

This or the acer Ryzen 3 5300u for $320? Similar spec.
This i3 definitely beats the ryzen 3 that you're referring to plus machine has a lot more features, better build quality and is a lot less heavy than the Acer

The only thing that rivals this deal for a budget PC that has a quad-core CPU, IPS displayand features like backlit keyboard &FP reader is the Costco $350 deal (same CPU) which has expired... But should be back over the next month or two

Are there any <$400 laptops or even <$700 laptops suitable for heavy gaming?

I think you're referring to the HP - it's a good value, too, but this is much better. The HP is absolute bottom of their lineup, below Pavilion - they didn't even bother naming it, it's just "HP Laptop." All plastic construction. No Power Delivery or Display Port on the USB-C. The Dell has about 30% more battery capacity. The HP also has has flaky Realtek wifi instead of the Intel wifi on this. Finally, while I haven't had that particular HP, in my experience their consumer PCs are a pain to service/upgrade compared to Dell - screws are often hidden under rubber strips (which can never be put back quite right), sometimes SODIMM slots are on the other side of the motherboard, requiring the keyboard (!) to be removed in order to upgrade RAM, etc.

For general-purpose use, including school work, you're not going to do better than this laptop without spending at least $500-600.

Also, to your point - that older one is running a 10th gen CPU and Intel finally did better with the 11th gen and really hit it out of the park with 12th gen (which this deal is 11th, but 11 is closer to 12th gen than 10th is to 11).
Intel must be playing tee-ball then because they still use much more power than Apple and AMD, while barely matching performance, when it comes to laptop CPUs.

I like your good review.

A couple things though - yes that i3 you compared to the i5 and i7 isn't far off, the i3 here is a much higher TDP chip, almost double - at least in your comparison. All the chips can scale pretty low to a decent amount. The comparison isn't exactly fair, I imagine the the higher TDP variants of an i5 or i7 is noticeable.

Also, I agree having a real USB-C port, not just some data or whatever - but I've been lambasted for downplaying no TB4 on a regular laptop and that someone in the future may miss it - as if someone buying sub $500 machines is concerned with TB4 in 5 years.
The differing TDPs specified on the Passmark site is wrong - it's in the same lineup as the 1135G7 and 1165G7, they all have configurable TDP-up of 28W and TDP-down of 12W - I confirmed this on Intel's ARK site. Anyway, as the average of thousands of Passmark benchmarks show, performance is basically identical to the higher-priced chips.

That's largely because Intel is stuck on 10nm fabrication process. At least they moved past 14nm+++++++++++ LOL.

But let's not pretend any of this matters for those shopping for <$400 laptops. This one is plenty fast, it runs a little hot but you can change that in the Dell Power Manager, sacrificing an insignificant amount of performance.

A certain top site is offering 11% ca$h back. :-) With that and $40 Amex offer, this deal could be around $267 - that might qualify as the laptop bargain of the year.

Chase also has 5% CB. If I remember right, Amex offer is $599+, so you need to buy 2 laptops ))
Can you elaborate on Chase's offer please? Is this through the freedom quarterly category? If so, I'm only seeing 5% back for gas, car rentals, movie theaters, and select live entertainment.

Edit: nvm, got it! It's one of the offers you have to "add" in order to use. Thanks for making me curious!

Anyone find a case for this? Or some sort of protective cover? I've been looking and they are all for the 2n1. My daughter is required to provide her own device for school this coming year so I bought the last deal for this laptop.
