Pretty sure I'm gonna go with this for now. Was going to build a pc with i5 12400 and 1650s for about 800. Granted my build has 1tb ssd and 16gb ram even without those my pc build is still more expensive than this laptop. And that build cost doesn't include monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.
This is a great deal! I recently got the Lenovo Ideapad gaming from GameStop, which was cheaper (and more so using up my points my son helped me accumulate), but the extra $50 here gets you a better screen, cpu, and more storage. This Victus is also easy enough to upgrade too, at least the RAM per things I've read (don't know about how easy the storage is, but 512 base isn't horrid).

Just keep in mind this is a 1650 mobile.. 50w chips vs 75w for the desktop 1650 and runs about 15% slower depending on the app

How about this Laptop for Non Gaming Users? This got 12th Gen, Backlit Keyboard, 512 GB SSD. Looks like good deal to me. Any thoughts?
It's a competent laptop outside of gaming too. What will you be doing?
If you're into professional content creation, videos, pictures, media, this might be a pass because the screen is serviceable, but not high enough level for good professional work like that.
Office stuff? Basic home pictures and videos? Emailing grandma? Yeah it's plenty sufficient.
Great deal, the i5-12450H is faster than the AMD 5600H, 1650 mobile is a good GPU for this price range, 512GB SSD, and while 8GB of RAM is not ideal, it is easily upgradeable.

I was thinking for an engineering school student. Looks like lot of VM and software will be installed.

Thanks good to know. I'm coming from a 2009 MacBook pro (don't laugh at me lol). Just getting back into video editing after years of not doing anything with it.
I figure this will be a solid reentry to test the waters and a great secondary computer if I get serious about it. Definitely excited to do my own build at some point. MacBook Pro was 2k at the the time (got the highest spec version) and what a waste of money.

It wouldn't be terrible for it, but that may be a case where an i7 or equivalent Ryzen might be better. Virtual machines typically need a lot of memory/RAM. Since this is upgradeable easily, you could get it and buy a decent SO-DIMM kit. 32GB wouldn't be too expensive and should suffice, I think the CPU can handle 64GB itself, but this laptop/mobo may not allow for that much. You'd have to really look into the technical specs on it if you need that much.
But for most any program, this would do fine. And honestly, 16GB would probably be fine unless you're running enough VM's for your entire class.
Why is this soo heavy? Comparable laptops in this size run around 3.75 pounds this thing is at over 5#! Thinking of getting this one for my wife for casual day-to-day… but the added 1.5 pounds just seems like a lot!
Just wanted to add that you can get a $30 rebate from i b o t t a. Similar to rebate sites you need to launch the best buy website by hitting the shop button in app (search hp victus in the app). Make sure the item is added to your cart after you launch best buy site from the app. Brings total down to $520 before tax.
