They always are way better, Synology thinks its still 2010 and their OS can command a huge premium. You get a better hardware bang for your buck from just about any other NAS manufacture. Qnap in my opinion because I been using it for 8 years is vastly superior, except for no on the fly software raids with uneven drives that synology can do.

Extremely but this is for people who do more than just backup data or play media files of a device. It can run docker and VM containers, it can run security cameras, it can be used with other cloud services for additional and remote backups. All while drawing extremely less power than a full sized PC people usually use to make something like this, not to mention extremely small form factor.

At this price this is a steal especially with the 2.5gb network ports.

The specs on this one seem better than the DS220+ Synology

I'm in for one. I have a lower-end qnap right now, and it'll be easier to migrate to a new qnap than another brand. I'd worry a little about the qnap security problems, but I'll only be accessible to the 'net via the VPN on my router, so that should (mostly) avoid problems.

This one has built-in 2.5G network and the processor is 4-core compared to DS220+ 2-core, also memory is 4GB vs 2GB, definitely a better deal IMO

I'm a newbie with nas systems. I was looking to add my 8 security cams to this. Do you need licensing purchases? I was reading licensing or something. Is this thing good enough (2 bays) for just security cameras? What raid option would anyone recommend? Sorry for all the questions.

This NAS come with exactly 8 licenses but you would have to check to make sure they are compatible with them. They have a huge compatibility list so in 99% of situations they should be but better safe than sorry. You can expand it up to 16 licenses but it would also require a RAM upgrade for the unit so it would add a lot of additional cost.

Since this is 2 bays you would be limited to Raid 1 or Raid 0, but since you are using it for Video Raid 1 which mirrors makes the most sense so if a hard drive fails you still have the video data available to you while you replace the failed drive.

I dont know about Qnas but Synology comes with 2 free licenses (2 cameras) and then each extra is $49/each lifetime.

Relatively longtime QNAP user here. Also used Synology for a bit. I seemed to pick up the QNAP OS faster. I was somewhat of a tech geek coming in and knew just enough about networking to be dangerous. So based on my personal experience, it might suggest that QNAP is aimed more towards the "new" users whereas Synology is more towards advanced/longtime users. I pretty much just use mine for a Plex server (including Live TV/DVR) and automated iPhone backup plus light file storage. It seems to work well for what I need it to do.

New to the NAS machines and therefor not an enthusiast or power user, so slightly better specs really don't matter that much to me. But would this QNAP machine be the better user friendly NAS for a first -time beginner vs the Synology DS220+

A bit off topic but does anyone have a NAS solution for Google photos where not only is there backup but shared albums and facial recognition to perform auto sorting? I have tried owncloud but it doesn't have those features. Google photos is really the last thing keeping me on google. Thanks in advance for ideas or suggestions.

I'm pretty new to Plex. I am currently using my MBP with a 500gb HDD attached right now, with plans to buy a RPi4b and use that as my plex server. Is this NAS a way better option? It looks like I need to buy additional ssds or hdds for this, correct? Thanks!
