Obviously because you need a volume measurement, not a weight measurement. How is the manufacturer supposed to know how much your brand of food weighs to help you understand how much is dispensed?

Quote from lazzlazz :
I wouldn't advise going away and simply leaving cats with a feeder. They could have medical emergencies (for example, urine blockages are an emergency - you need to get the cat into the vet).

It's important to have someone checking in daily to make sure the cats' behavior is normal. You might be able to get around daily check ins if you have wifi cameras, and watch their behavior, but even with wifi, I'd still arrange for someone (who the cats know and will interact with) to check in every few days. The wi-fi camera (showing the food dispenser) also allows you to verify food is being dispensed and all cats are eating. (I know wi-fi food dispensers supposedly report back that food was dispensed, but that feature can misbehave.)
Thank you for the cat parenting advice, but I never said or implied that I leave my cats unattended for several days at a time.

I have auto feeders so they don't wake me up at 430 in the morning demanding food. This is also why I chose to get two feeders instead of one with a splitter, so they'd still get some food if one malfunctioned.
