Obviously because you need a volume measurement, not a weight measurement. How is the manufacturer supposed to know how much your brand of food weighs to help you understand how much is dispensed?

Love this device. I already bought one for my gf's cat. Very useful when the gf comes for sleepovers or traveling. You can also record a little sound. Ours goes "BoooOOTs! Come get your dinner!"

Amazon page says each portion is 20mL. Not sure why it's measured in liquid volume rather than grams.

I bought a similar one from the same brand. It was unreliable. Don't expect to be able to use this to feed your pet while you're away.

I have the 5L camera version of this.

I use it for a big dog (110#), and feed him multiple times a day. Works with the bigger kibble (Nature's Domain or whatever at Costco) surprisingly well.

The app is a bit rough, it's not terrible though. They are constantly updating it and trying to make it better it seems. It has the option of setting multiple feedings a day, or manually control it. Wish it was Alexa enabled as I wake up at different times throughout the weekend and would rather just say "Alexa feed dog" or whatever.

Not sure if this one has it, but the camera one has a very quiet speaker that allows you to communicate to the dog or pre-record messages during the feeding. It's so quiet it's pretty much worthless. The kibble hitting the metal bowl is much louder and that's what alerts my dog to the feeding.

I know this isn't the camera one, but the video streaming works decently, it can record events and stuff like that.

To clarify on this, I have the non-wifi version and how it works is a spinning chamber that fills a 20ml area at one point in the rotation and dumps it out the bottom at another point in the rotation. So a portion is one rotation. My dog gets 10 portions (~1 Cup) 3 times a day.

I have two adult cats and have these. I went with two 3L units. They get 1/3 of a cup twice a day and I refill it about every two weeks.

My only issue with them is that the clock on one is slower than the other. So it falls behind and the cats will rush to the faster one every time. I have to resync them about every week or so.

So you could also get away with using the 5L with a splitter, but I read the splitter doesn't evenly disperse the food. So two 3L may be a better choice.
I wouldn't advise going away and simply leaving cats with a feeder. They could have medical emergencies (for example, urine blockages are an emergency - you need to get the cat into the vet).

It's important to have someone checking in daily to make sure the cats' behavior is normal. You might be able to get around daily check ins if you have wifi cameras, and watch their behavior, but even with wifi, I'd still arrange for someone (who the cats know and will interact with) to check in every few days. The wi-fi camera (showing the food dispenser) also allows you to verify food is being dispensed and all cats are eating. (I know wi-fi food dispensers supposedly report back that food was dispensed, but that feature can misbehave.)

I fill a large bowl and my Doodle free-grazes as she pleases. She only overeats after staying at someone's house when we go out of town when they had feeding schedules.

Same food every day for years only doesn't create excitement in eating. Sitting eye-level at my kitchen table every meal is her only food excitement.

We leave our 3 cats with the large model with 2 bowls. But we also have a camera pointed at it so we can see them daily as well as have someone go every few days to take care of litter, fill the water dispenser, etc. It helps not having to have someone go every single day and paid for itself easily because of that.

The bigger problem is when we are gone they like to just hang out near this, which trips my camera alert nonstop. Glad I got 50 videos of my cat laying there…

Thanks, very helpful! I was just looking at the camera version. Looks like a first iteration of the product. Hopefully they will get better. I was perplexed why they insist on D-cell batteries instead of built-in rechargeable battery that you don't have to remember to replace from time to time. And the app, according to description won't be able to connect if feeder is running on battery. In my home WiFi router (among other critical appliances) is connected to a solar generator that automatically kicks in if power is lost and ideally I would love feeder to continue to connect to internet even if there's no power.

I have one of these for almost a year and have only one complaint.... The clock looses time so I need to correct it monthly. The D size batteries it requires last 6+ months

Solid advice. I've personally had a gravely ill cat that was still eating normally. Had I not noticed that he was peeing blood (in the litter box), I wouldn't have known anything was wrong by looking at a camera.

The only upside I see to D-cell batteries is that they are easy to replace and (for now) readily available. I have another older automatic feeder that uses a proprietary removable NiMH battery pack as its backup. Since the company that made it went out of business, my only recourse is now to try and build my own pack out of 4 AA sized NiMH batteries or find some other power source for it. I'm at the point now of just getting a small UPS unit to power it.

I guess it would have been nice if you could put a 18650 lithium battery in there or something instead of the D-cell batteries, but who knows what their reasoning was.

Since this unit is powered off USB-C, I wonder if you'd be able to just put a USB power bank between the charger and the feeder and have that power it in case of failure. You'd have to have a charger that allowed pass-through power while being charged and also one that didn't require pushing a button or something to start charging, but at least that would be relatively easy and inexpensive. I'm assuming this thing is powered off 5V since 3 D-Cell alkaline batteries would provide 4.5V so it might be possible to do this.

USB power banks have got stupid cheap lately and even if you had to replace it every couple years, it'd still be cheaper than buying D-Cell batteries in the long term.
