I dropped one in the center console of my car, for the rare instances I couldn't get parking in a parking garage and had to park blocks away on the side of a street. Then I know exactly where I parked in case I forget. Suppose I could also track it within the first couple of days if my car gets stolen…
I just got a set of 4 tiles for half this price on hsn but I have to say, the network is so much smaller than apples so it doesn't work that well.
Is there any way to use these with android devices? I have a pixel phone.
Congratulations on throwing away your money. Tiles was a good product, but it never really took off since almost right after the release rumors started of Apple releasing their own tracking device. And now with Apple AirTags on the market, Tiles is as good as dead. Besides, every iPhone owner is an automatic AirTag tracker. You would need to lose your item where no human foot stepped for it not to be found.
I put AirTag on my adventurous dog and was able to track him down five streets over in someone's backyard just by looking up his location on iPhone. Did not even need to set him as lost, AirTag just keeps tracking everything that it is attached to.

Yeah, problem is I dont have an iphone so unless I'm missing something, there is no good alternative. I think tile was out for years before Apple came around though

It was out for almost two years before AirTag, but rumors started right away and it kept many potential buyers (like myself) away, since Tiles is only as good as the network of owners who have the app installed, and this created chicken and egg situation for the company.
Without iPhone you're missing on too much, AirTag is just one of many examples. Unless Google releases similar product and embeds support into Android, I don't see any alternative product appearing. And even if Google does it (which I sincerely doubt), the growth would be limited due to pathetic number of phones on the market that can be updated to the latest Android version. You don't have this problem with iPhone as most iPhones in use today have the latest iOS, which supports Airtag.
What's the point if the thief can get alerted and disable it?
It takes time for the thief to know they are being tracked. And if hidden well during the time they take to look for it the thief can potentially be found. We use them for our bikes and sons bike. We can track his bike ar school so if someone takes it while he is in class I would know. Also we have a number of bikes we ride in our group and we can track our bikes. Possibly if the thief was alerted after stealing a bike they would ditch it if they couldn't find the tag easily.
Besides theft prevention they are also useful for keeping track of your own items. Wallet, keys, luggage, bags, etc.
