What is this Service?:
  • Shodan is a search engine for Internet-connected devices. Are you interested in measuring which countries are becoming more connected, which version of Microsoft IIS is the most popular or you want to find the control servers for malware? Maybe a new vulnerability came out and you want to see how many hosts it could affect? Shodan helps answer these questions and more.
  • How is it different than other search engines?
    • The most fundamental difference is that Shodan crawls the Internet whereas other search engines crawls the World Wide Web. However, the devices powering the World Wide Web only make up a tiny fraction of what's actually connected to the Internet. Shodan's goal is to provide a complete picture of the Internet.
  • Full Run down of the service here.

It's definitely a techy thing. My husband says they use the monitoring for their web hosting and office ips to scan for vulnerabilities.
It can also show things exposed that shouldn't be. For example, the images tab shows a bunch of unsecured webcams and publicly exposed Remote Desktop instances (do not do that).

Much more to it than that, but if you aren't in IT, and a bit of a nerd, it probably won't help you.

Youd be better served spending that $5 on aluminum foil.

What search engine do hackers use?

1. Shodan. Being called both "the search engine for hackers" as well as "the world's first search engine for Internet-connected devices", it's easy to guess why Shodan is the first logical choice.Jul 14, 2020

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank comm0

this is a pretty cool site to explore with, it can scan for unsecured cameras and such and you can spend hours looking at all the cams. You can narrow it down to specific types of routers, cams etc. You can check for default login credentials embedded in those cheap chinese cameras you bought or your ISP modem/router. Good to ensure your home network isnt leaking IoT stuff using filter [net:your IP Address]

They essentially scan the internet in intervals. You can scan your own household to see if you have anything exposed, scan your loved ones to make sure they aren't exposed/vulnerable. You can set up monitoring as an added layer of security on your web services/home. Use it for fun research purposes and yes watch your neighbors unsecured cameras. for $5 have some fun. Endless possibilities.

Do you just type in your network ip address to search your household? I'd like to learn more on how to use this service since I forget that I bought a subscription long time ago.
