It's long but trust me, this is the short version.

Essentially, it boiled down to Google not showing my phone as activated. They shipped it to me, I ported my number, they turned it on, I used it and they charged me for Fi's service. BUT they didn't start the clock on the 24 months. After the first month, it still showed that I had 24 months remaining. After the second month, it still showed that I had 24 months left. This continued for a total of 6 months. I notified Google of the issue after the 1st month. Was assured that it would be corrected. This process was repeated with each billing cycle. Phone calls, emails, and chats with support. All to no avail.

In month 5 I get an email from Google telling me that my subscription will be canceled shortly if I do not activate my phone. Ironically, the email suggests that if I have any further questions that I should go out to a USER support group for help. Yeah - I'm sure Joe, a random forum user and non-Google employee will fix my activation issue on the Google servers. Anyway, after that email was sent I contacted support again. They assured me that this wasn't a problem. My account was flagged as being worked on. No adverse action would be taken.

In month 6 I get an email from Google telling me that my Google Pay account has been charged the $450 full price of the 5a less the $60 I have paid towards the device over the past 6 months. My last call to support was to tell them to please cancel my Fi service and notify them that I will never, ever, ever do business with Fi again.

So ... how did this hurt me? First, at the time I could have bought the phone outright for $450 (which is what I ultimately paid). However, I could have gotten free Pixel Buds ($100 value) + 3 months of Fi unlimited ($210 value). I missed both of those by choosing the subscription. I wasted at least 10 hours and a whole lot of aggravation dealing with ineptitude. Google employs some of the most brilliant engineers in the world and they can't figure out why my clearly active phone/account are showing not activated? So frustrating.

Anyway, that's the short version. There's a bunch of stuff I'm leaving out to keep it kind of brief. On a side note, I love the Pixel 5a. In my household, we've had the Galaxy Nexus, 4, and 7. The Pixel 2, 3a, 4XL, 5a (and we just pre-ordered the 6a through the trade-in program). I generally love Google phones (and the best tablet ever created - the Nexus 7). However, their mobile company is the worst. Both from a customer service perspective and their ability to troubleshoot issues.

I did the subscription deal with Fi for the 5a last August. Long story short, I ended up cancelling due to multiple issues on their end. At least 10 hours wasted on either phone support or trading emails or via chat. I have never dealt with such inept support.

In my case, I ended up paying full price for the phone. I missed out on bundling deals they had if I had just bought outright through Google. And I was saddled with an expensive and inferior plan for 6 months while dealing with them. That $200 savings I was going to get over 24 months ended up costing me way more than buying outright at release.

Before I did the subscription I read numerous horror stories about Fi's customer service. I thought it wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. Never again will I deal with them regardless of the deal.

Finally, MOST people love Fi. Works great for them. They never need support. They don't get the complaints. And that's wonderful. Just warning that my experience is anything but unique. Stuff does happen and when it does - good luck. Head over to Reddit and read about the numerous problems people encounter with this subscription plan.

Curious if you can elaborate on what your issues were. I'm sure like most things in life, it really matters who you speak with. I've had to talk with fi support a few times over the 3 or 4 years I've had fi, and it's always been a pretty great experience. Granted, most of those issues were over a year ago, and thing like that can degrade pretty quickly, so it's also possible things are just worse in general now.

Bummer you had such a crap experience though.

agree - also FI does offer awesome deals on phones throughout the year, long time customer
Subscriptions are available to anyone but Fi has not offered a good deal on outright purchases of phones for current subscribers since they cleared out the S21 stock for $300 more than half a year ago. It's pretty irritating, actually.

Quote from rayb02 :
Subscription seems like a no brainer for Fi customers willing to stick with the phone for 2 years. Phone is yours after 2 years and the option to continue or leave the subscription at that point. You protect the device from serious damage.
The device protection plan seems like a complete ripoff ($5/month = $120) and there are many more reports of negative experiences with claims on reddit than their are positive ones.

The subscription itself is an okay deal if you plan on stay on Fi, but the terms are excessively punitive. They can basically charge you full price for the phone for missing a single payment, e.g. if you forget to update the expiry date on your card or you have any kind of problem with Google payments. Chances are you won't, but if you do... good luck.

I'm actually surprised more people don't want to be on Google Fi, especially if you have/need 3 or more lines on the Simply Unlimited. Much better speeds than Visible (I know low priority Verizon is the reason), equally as fast as T-Mobile was, and much cheaper than most anything else for the amount of data.
I had Google Fi as a free 3 month trial when buying the pixel 5a and I also have visible. My upload speeds were horrendous with Google Fi. It was 2mbps to 6mbps up where as visible would push 10-20mbps up and my post paid Verizon acct pushes between 20 - 30mbps avg. The download speeds on visible were about 60-80mbps consistently where as Google Fi would be an abysmal 3-5mbps down at times but would hit about 20-35mbps avg with full bars, I think there was one time where it hit around 1-2mbps down with 3/4 bars. I don't think I've ever seen visible hit below 40mbps down. My post paid Verizon acct consistently hits over 100mbps down on 4G. I haven't checked my 5G speeds as of yet. Visible is consistently $25 no matter how much data I use.

I personally think if you get great Verizon signal then you should go with visible as it's very consistent with their speeds, pricing and reliability. If not then definitely look into Google Fi, T-Mobile over ATT.

as an added note my Verizon 5G home internet hit 330mbps down consistently, 20mbps up and ping times of 15-18ms

Google Fi doesn't work nicely with Apple iphones. This is why I haven't switched over from our family's metro plan. Right now everyone gets 5g service and the speeds are blazing fast on our area (5G UC). If we switched to Fi the 2/4 iPhone folks would only get 4G LTE... And my wife's voicemail would get moved to the Fi app. 1st world problem but sort of important as well, when we live in such a connected society.

I have tried visible on three different occasions and never had an experience like what you're describing. The speeds even though they're not capped we're never above 5 megabytes per second down and less than one up. I mean never I couldn't even get it in the middle of the night. Verizon service in my area does get 60 to 80 down and 20 to 30 up but visible has always been terrible. Sometimes the speeds were even less than one during the more peak hours. I've tried it with visible phones and Verizon phones and two different pixels including a pixel 6 and my experience has been so bad on visible I've convinced other people to get off. MINT unlimited for 360 for the year or 30 a month is worth the 5 bucks for me not to have less than 1 Mbps in my area. I don't have 4 lines I only have 1, so fi isn't a good one for me. I recently have entered att red pocket 100 gb plan because MINT and the T-Mobile have been updating towers here and well coverage not back to normal yet soo att it is. My experience
MINT - speeds 300-400mbps down, 40-60 up
Att red pocket 40-80 Mbps down, 10-20 up
Verizon - 60-80 down, 40+ up
My friend on TMobile post 60-100 down, 20-30 up
ATT post friend 1-200 down, 60-80 up
Speeds coverage etc all dependent where you are, you're phone etc.. all play factors be careful reading others experience it means nothing to yours!!!

I don't blame you for switching off of visible with speeds like that. And look at your mint mobile speeds those are higher then what I get from my Verizon 5g home internet, especially the upload. I used to use visible as my home internet running on a T9 hotspot for a year and a half. Used to do about 400Gb on avg every month. Worked out well for awhile then started having problems with the T9 unit so I switched to Verizon 5g home internet. And the experience has been better with higher download speeds but for some reason lately it has been having problems streaming music. It's been cutting out as if it's buffering. Don't know why it's happening because I can stream 4k content without any lag.
It sounds like you've found good internet so really that's all that matters. Nowadays you have to just try everything and see what works best for you. I haven't heard of anyone having the speeds as low on visible as you have. I wouldn't have expected that.

What is the final price you pay after taxes and fees?

They had pretty much non-existent support, the people you would occasionally get a hold of would not even have the admin rights or whatever power to do any changes.

We had went from Visible to G-FI and it was nightmare how the staff from Google Fi made Visible staff look competent.

At least from the Google Fi app (while on my Pixel 4a), I was able to go through the screens to get a new Pixel 6a on subscription (for $10 per month + taxes). I didn't complete the purchase yet though, I only got to the screen where they said they would "run a final credit check".
I've been a Google Fi member for about 2+ years now. I'm just hesitating whether or not to wait for the Pixel 7.
I'm sure the pixel 7 will be filled with problems like every device before it. Might as well take this good deal.

They offered me $295 trade in value on my Pixel 3A with a cracked screen. So I'm getting the 6A and Pixel Buds for $155 and don't have to switch carriers. No brainer.

This is 100% accurate. I moved three numbers over to Google Fi. One was for a new phone promo and the other two was a phone number transfer to provide a $100 credit each. The phone and SIM cards were lost in transit. After hours of talking with Google I finally found a rep to reship the items out after a month had passed from the initial purchase. We were able to activate the new phone so we were not charged full price, but lost $200 worth of promotions. After multiple attempts, Google continues to say they have forwarded the issue with their promotions department, but I yet to receive any correspondence.

there seems to be a big risk with the subscription: if you choose to purchase it with the subscription, you will have to keep the device active with Google Fi. if the device is broken during the two years then you have to pay for the full price. if you add the protection then it is 360$. not too much a deal.
