Essentially, it boiled down to Google not showing my phone as activated. They shipped it to me, I ported my number, they turned it on, I used it and they charged me for Fi's service. BUT they didn't start the clock on the 24 months. After the first month, it still showed that I had 24 months remaining. After the second month, it still showed that I had 24 months left. This continued for a total of 6 months. I notified Google of the issue after the 1st month. Was assured that it would be corrected. This process was repeated with each billing cycle. Phone calls, emails, and chats with support. All to no avail.
In month 5 I get an email from Google telling me that my subscription will be canceled shortly if I do not activate my phone. Ironically, the email suggests that if I have any further questions that I should go out to a USER support group for help. Yeah - I'm sure Joe, a random forum user and non-Google employee will fix my activation issue on the Google servers. Anyway, after that email was sent I contacted support again. They assured me that this wasn't a problem. My account was flagged as being worked on. No adverse action would be taken.
In month 6 I get an email from Google telling me that my Google Pay account has been charged the $450 full price of the 5a less the $60 I have paid towards the device over the past 6 months. My last call to support was to tell them to please cancel my Fi service and notify them that I will never, ever, ever do business with Fi again.
So ... how did this hurt me? First, at the time I could have bought the phone outright for $450 (which is what I ultimately paid). However, I could have gotten free Pixel Buds ($100 value) + 3 months of Fi unlimited ($210 value). I missed both of those by choosing the subscription. I wasted at least 10 hours and a whole lot of aggravation dealing with ineptitude. Google employs some of the most brilliant engineers in the world and they can't figure out why my clearly active phone/account are showing not activated? So frustrating.
Anyway, that's the short version. There's a bunch of stuff I'm leaving out to keep it kind of brief. On a side note, I love the Pixel 5a. In my household, we've had the Galaxy Nexus, 4, and 7. The Pixel 2, 3a, 4XL, 5a (and we just pre-ordered the 6a through the trade-in program). I generally love Google phones (and the best tablet ever created - the Nexus 7). However, their mobile company is the worst. Both from a customer service perspective and their ability to troubleshoot issues.

In my case, I ended up paying full price for the phone. I missed out on bundling deals they had if I had just bought outright through Google. And I was saddled with an expensive and inferior plan for 6 months while dealing with them. That $200 savings I was going to get over 24 months ended up costing me way more than buying outright at release.
Before I did the subscription I read numerous horror stories about Fi's customer service. I thought it wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. Never again will I deal with them regardless of the deal.
Finally, MOST people love Fi. Works great for them. They never need support. They don't get the complaints. And that's wonderful. Just warning that my experience is anything but unique. Stuff does happen and when it does - good luck. Head over to Reddit and read about the numerous problems people encounter with this subscription plan.

Bummer you had such a crap experience though.
The subscription itself is an okay deal if you plan on stay on Fi, but the terms are excessively punitive. They can basically charge you full price for the phone for missing a single payment, e.g. if you forget to update the expiry date on your card or you have any kind of problem with Google payments. Chances are you won't, but if you do... good luck.
I personally think if you get great Verizon signal then you should go with visible as it's very consistent with their speeds, pricing and reliability. If not then definitely look into Google Fi, T-Mobile over ATT.
as an added note my Verizon 5G home internet hit 330mbps down consistently, 20mbps up and ping times of 15-18ms

It sounds like you've found good internet so really that's all that matters. Nowadays you have to just try everything and see what works best for you. I haven't heard of anyone having the speeds as low on visible as you have. I wouldn't have expected that.
We had went from Visible to G-FI and it was nightmare how the staff from Google Fi made Visible staff look competent.
I've been a Google Fi member for about 2+ years now. I'm just hesitating whether or not to wait for the Pixel 7.

This is 100% accurate. I moved three numbers over to Google Fi. One was for a new phone promo and the other two was a phone number transfer to provide a $100 credit each. The phone and SIM cards were lost in transit. After hours of talking with Google I finally found a rep to reship the items out after a month had passed from the initial purchase. We were able to activate the new phone so we were not charged full price, but lost $200 worth of promotions. After multiple attempts, Google continues to say they have forwarded the issue with their promotions department, but I yet to receive any correspondence.
