Only real downside I can see on this laptop is the ~200nit screen. Its probably worth calling out for people planning to use it outside or in bright areas.

Quote from Baraka :
How long ago did you find/buy this model in a store?

They're inventory control is infamously inaccurate even when talking to people at the store.

I have to question what percentage of people bought this and did not have issues with quality, build etc. Going by past threads on this model.
As I noted above I bought the 15.6" Gateway (Rose Gold!) in September 2020. Way overpriced for $500+; however, I think this 14" is a good deal for $249, if you can find it.

My thoughts on the 15.6" issues: Dim screen (probably no more than 200 nits; I have no idea what the sRGB rating is but colors look washed out and not very vibrant at all); terrible keyboard, doesn't feel good; horrible trackpad - inconsistently registers taps; battery doesn't last very long (maybe 4-5 hours); very heavy - feels like it weighs 6lb!; when opening the laptop/lifting the lead, it feels like it is going to pop off and the hinges even visibly buckle a bit; the chassis is very cheap, made of plastic and flexes A LOT if you carry with one hand [so use two hands!]); doesn't have an ethernet port (wish it did, but it seems these are becoming a rarity - I knew that when I bought it but still miss the feature). Oh, and the charger is not easy to fit into the charging port. The problem is that one side has the charger port and the other side has the headphone port, AND both ports are the same shape and size.. and the indicators on the chassis are in a pale white color (on a bright pink case!) that is VERY hard to see. I have plugged the charger cable into the headphone jack more than once, by accident. Yes, this is my fault, but they could have also used a different jack for the charger, OR had the port for charging on the back of the laptop (to make it less likely for a dumb user like me to plug into the wrong port!). Smilie One last thing, the speakers are T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. They are "tuned by THX audio" (whatever that means??) but are by far the worst speakers I have used on any device (including my Nintendo Gameboy from the '90s). The volume never gets loud enough, of course there is zero bass, and the sound that does escape the punishingly tiny speakers is tinny as can be. Use the headphone jack!

Good points: Very easy and painless upgrade to Windows 11; runs Ubuntu (Linux) fantasically [I dual boot Win 11 & Linux); WiFi is not blazing fast but OK. There is also a easy-access port on the bottom, held in place with a single screw, that allows you to add an M.2 SATA SSD (not NVME!). This is a painless way to upgrade storage space, without having to buy a new SSD, clone the old onto the new, remove the whole bottom case and replace the drive. Very nice feature. (I have not bothered to upgrade it, though - 256GB is enough for what I use it for; basic web browsing and productivity tasks).

Sadly none in stock near me, but FWIW:
  • I've had one of the refurbs since Black Friday last year
  • Value for the money is excellent
  • Most of the prior threads (for the refurb version, mind you) have cited hit or miss, ending up with a like new fantastic lappy OR some with "it crapped out on me"
  • i5 processor and 16GB to enable plenty of tabs to be left open, you'll be hard pressed to find a laptop with those specs at this price....but they also had to make shortcuts too....probably poor support, and the plug into the laptop looks fragile so you want to be very careful with it. The display is ok, but not terribly bright.
  • I like the physical texture, the top feels premium for the money tho the rest of it is cheap plastic
  • There's a USB C which some have reported being able to charge the laptop on; I've had some experience with this and I believe that is the case as well
  • If you're in the market for a laptop, I'd say go for it assuming that you are comfortable with Walmart's return policy. I don't think they have restocking fees or anything.
I agree with all that. In addition, I think if I had bought mine for the refurbished price I would have felt it was a better value. The trap I fell into at purchase time, was thinking this was the same Gateway from the '90s. Nope! Acer bought the name and EVOO is building this laptop for them. It is not a high quality device. Good value for refurb, awesome value for $249 but a ripoff for what I paid 1.5 years go. Big Grin For basic web surfing etc. it is OK, but it is nothing special.

Really thankful to OP for this. I am a slickdealer and techgeek for years now. I bought my current laptop from a TigerDirect deal last year that was insane for a premium machine. But my girlfriend is studying for LSATs and her computer finally crapped out (our old college laptop from 7 years ago). She didn't want to spend a lot of money so I tried to talk her into the Ideapad 5 Pro from costco about a month ago for $550 as it seemed like a fantastic deal for a premium laptop. She still thought it was a lot, and sure, fine, $550 is a lot for many people, and I am a cheap slickdealer, but I thought it was a great deal. But now with this, I think we got both affordable and usability!

She will love this! I just went ahead and bought it. She mainly needs better ram and storage. This being a decently new i5 is a cherry on top. She is not a tech geek so the screen should be fine. And to top it all off, OTD was $265.

I will set it up for her tomorrow and see how it holds up. I can give an update/first hands review when I am done with its setup!

Edit: I posted a small first hands review and wanted to put it here in case more people could see it. Also, ours does charge on USB-C.

So I picked it up last night and opened it to see how the general build quality was. Everything felt great. The top cover I believe is metal. The bottom is plastic. Keyboard is decent actually so far. I don't like the layout, but travel seems to be decent. Screen is alright. Not the brightest, but we should not expect that at this price. Colors are fine, I am guessing this is somewhere in the middle of 45 to 72 NTSC.

Setting up was quick and she seems to be able to use it fairly fine. I made sure that it had all internals. I am weird about that stuff so I just make sure. 16 gigs ram, i5, SSD. All checked out. I saw a youtube video about this exact same laptop from I believe ETA prime and apparently, the BIOS is decently untouched, so you can go and tinker. He upped the TDP on the i5 from 15 to 30 and it doubled his benchmark scores. We won't be doing that yet unless she thinks it's slow but it feels speedy even to me. I am sure that bump could also eat battery life if not plugged into power.

Seriously, it felt good enough that for $265 OTD I went and bought another this morning to have around as a spare laptop. As someone else mentioned, the internal components alone are probably worth more than the price. I am getting a keyboard, screen, fan, and chassis for free.

And yes, mine also has a spot for an SSD upgrade.

Hope this helps someone!

Sounds great! And I would be very interested in your review. Maybe the 14" is better than the 15.6"? I have never tried the 14", it is possible it is better. You can see my post above to see what I thought of the 15.6" I bought.

Yeah that makes me not want it at all. Considering the typical low end for a crap screen is 250 nits.

A lot of people dont really care about the display as long as you can use it though.

Oh well none showing in stock on the 2 provided BS links for me (weird that all the BS links werent posted like they usually are)

As it should be when a moron brings a low power light home use laptop to work where more powerful computing power is needed. Duh.

Does anyone know about hard drive upgradeability? Does it have a slot for a second hard drive, and does it use m.2 ssd? Seems like a good price for a budget gaming laptop for older games.

None in stock here but a couple locations do show the $250 price. I'm really tempted to try to return/rebuy.
