This movie and Passion of Christ were bitter truth movies that show the reality of Christianity and crusades.
BTW, I agree that Orlando Bloom might not seem a good cast, but, the movie has so many great actors, plus the movie was not at all Gladiator like to be centered around one character, that's the reason the Orlando Bloom slight miscast didn't affect the movie.

I studied the crusades era and read books from various writers including European, Syrian and Jordanian including religious books and text and accuracy might not be 100% but atrocities were not even shown 50% of what they did historically.
Passion was a different subject and Mel Gibson direction was really good, I wouldn't really compare Scott and Gibson as Scott was dealing with pretty vast subject, and wide period of history where as Gibson was portray the last moments of Jesus.
The common thing was both movies was not really Hollywood garbage kind of movies like 300.
Both these movies tried to be as close to reality and history as allowed, though both Gibson and Scott very well knew that they will be pissing off many religious hypocrites and it did piss off, otherwise these movies should have 8-9 star ratings.
