What is considered online retail? Does this mean any online purchases? Or only specific retail stores online?

U.S. Online Retail Purchases

To earn additional rewards on online retail purchases, the purchases must be made on a website or a digital application (an app) from a U.S. retail merchant that sells physical goods or merchandise directly to consumers. To identify eligible online retail purchases, we rely on information provided to us by the merchant.

The following are not considered retail purchases: purchases made at restaurants, supermarkets, gasoline stations, or automotive dealers, as well as purchases of travel, entertainment, or other services. Payment must be made online and categorized as an internet transaction by the merchant for purchase to be eligible. You will not receive additional rewards for purchases ordered online but paid for in store. Payments made in store using a mobile or digital wallet or a contactless payment device are not considered online purchases. You will not receive additional rewards for purchases made by phone or mail, or by using a third party "buy now pay later" installment program.

Examples* of purchases that will earn additional rewards include, but are not limited to:
Major retailers (e.g., Amazon.com, Walmart.com)
Pet stores (e.g., Chewy.com)
Furniture stores (e.g., Wayfair.com)
Department stores
Drug Stores
Book stores
Auto & home supply stores
Personal and household care
Toy & Hobby stores
Computer & Electronic stores
Apparel, Footwear, and Accessories stores
Sporting goods stores
*This is not a complete list.

Additional list of categories where you will NOT earn additional rewards include:
Airline tickets
Concert ticket purchases
Food delivery platforms
Online grocery orders
Rideshare services
Streaming services
Wireless cellular providers

Saw this in BankRate article about changes:

An Amex representative tells me the Blue Cash Everyday's online retail category is very broadly defined. "There's no specific list of qualifying merchants," the Amex rep says. "It only does not apply to purchases made in store or to services bought online, like travel bookings or online food delivery. But from pet supplies to the latest kitchen gadget to new shoes, and almost everything in between, Card Members will get rewarded with 3% cash back when they shop online, on up to $6,000 per year."

Is this for existing Amex BCE cardholders too or just new applications?

Got the email announcement and love it. BoA cash rewards already has 3% for a long time but one benefit it has is the extended warranty for 1 year. So for big purchases or none Amex Offers, you can use BoA.

is there a dashboard somewhere to track how much of the yearly $6000 is left to be used?
No, you can track it yourself, or create a filter to track it for you, but the date you need to track by is your anniversary date which the filter will not know. I use a Google sheet

Does online checkout via Paypal with this card count as 3%?

It's capped at $6K per year. If you spend more than that anyway, in this category, it won't matter. I'm guessing many of us on SD exceed that.

SERIOUSLY??? My preferred Amex Blue I pay over $100 per year just to have earns 1% in online and this one triple that?? I'm definitely going to cancel my Preferred Blue. This is ridiculous and a spit on the face to customers like me who have paid annual fees for over 10 years...

yes and no. Discover 5% is not permanent - mostly only 1 quarter out of 4 in a year.
