Saw this earlier.. wasn't using this card anymore but now it moves to be top. Wish all Amex still had extended warranty option though..

I've been thinking about getting an Amex since I always see those statement credit deals they have (e.g. at the Lego store). Does this one usually qualify for those? Another rewards card seems useful, but I don't know if I want to juggle 3 credit cards at this point.

Those statement credits are targeted, but many are available for this card.

I've gotten credits from Lego, Dell (have one now for $50 off $250), Walmart, various streaming services (Max, Paramount+, Showtime, Stars, Peacock, etc.), autopay of cell phone or internet bills, and so forth.

Most of the bonuses offered tend to be for travel/cruises (MGM Grand, Waldorf Astoria, Norwegian and Holland America cruise lines, etc.), more high-end consumer or luxury brands (Lulu Lemon, Kate Spade, Prada, Givenchy, Burberry, though I often see Levi's, Zappos, and Champion deals as well), and subscription services like HelloFresh and various wine vendors. The trick is to just add ALL the offers to your card and then new ones will load and you can add those as well until you find something you'll use.

Also, do not get a credit card just for rewards/credits if you weren't already going to be buying those sorts of things anyway. No reason to carry an extra line of credit so that you might get $20 off a $100 Lego purchase once per year.

This and PayPal are my favorite 3% cashback cards.

The only card that beats the Amex 3% on gas is the citi custom cash 5%, IF gas is your highest spending category. Citi keeps denying me and my 740 cs though!🤷 ♂️

This card also has no annual fee and is a great entry into Amex. You don't get the majority of perks, but some of the deals hit this card! I got $10 back on $50+ for internet payments. Paid ahead for spectrum.

To earn additional rewards on online retail purchases, the purchase must be made on a website or a digital application (an app) from a U.S. retail merchant that sells physical goods or merchandise directly to consumers. To identify eligible online retail purchases, we rely on information provided to us by the merchant. The following are not considered retail purchases: purchases made at restaurants, supermarkets, gasoline stations, or automotive dealers, as well as purchases of travel, entertainment, or other services. Payment must be made online and categorized as an internet transaction by the merchant for the purchase to be eligible. You will not receive additional rewards for purchases ordered online but paid for in store. Payments made in store using a mobile or digital wallet or a contactless payment device are not considered online purchases. You will not receive additional rewards for purchases made by phone or mail, or by using a third party "buy now pay later" installment program.

So, will using this card through PayPal while paying online not trigger the cashback? Can someone clarify?

Nah, I'll pass. This is not a good deal. First I can't shop with Amex in a bunch of places, and small online retailers, can't shop in costco and h-mart, can't use on bunch of places where I actually need CC - parking meters, rental car insurance, and besides more and more restaurants are not accepting Amex anymore. Besides 3% on $6000 is less than the 2% on everything I get from other cards, 5% on box stores, 3% on amazon on others. You can nickel and dime everything, but I'd stay away from Amex. Their old glory days are over.
Keep in mind about their CC applications - once you're approved you'll get a hard hit from them at least once an year if not more often.
Uhh what? Did you just pull that last "fact" out of thin air? I've had Amex for 12 years and have never had a hard check to my credit report other than the when I first applied for the card(s) with them.

Maybe you're special, IDK your situation.
I agree with the other person, I'm not sure why you're getting hard credit checks annually

I have 5-6 different Amex cards and don't see any checks besides the initial one

It will but I found that it doesn't always trigger the 3% after a while and I hadn't even hit my $6000 limit.

Paypa actually beats the amex now from a sheer 3% back on online purchases. Amex is also no longer accepted on ebay which was where I was getting most of the 3% cashback purchases for.

The other problem is that amex doesn't classify a lot of online purchases as valid for the 3% whereas paypal gives you 3% anytime you use PayPal Mastercard through the paypal option on any website that offers it.

I have this card, it's nice but I wish I noticed the exclusions on 'supermarket' (you have to click on a separate page for them):
Basic Card Members will earn a reward of 3% cash back on the first $6,000 of eligible purchases across the Card Account in a calendar year (then 1%) at supermarkets located in the U.S. (superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services are not considered supermarkets); 3% cash back on the first of $6,000 of U.S. online retail purchases across the Card Account (then 1%), 3% cash back on the first $6,000 of purchases of gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S across the Card Account (then 1%), (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations); and 1% on all other eligible purchases.

I think they work well with eachother. The Amex should give the 3% as long as it's physical product and isn't pick-up... I think it may even work on digital. I'd assume they have fine print and/or would fix it if things didn't register properly. I also just received the alert that Amex is leaving ebay so that's a bummer. I still also use it for gas and also offers a flat 3% on groceries. The downfall is it drops to 1% on anything else and Amex is taken at fewer places.

PayPal is more sure in what it does, but not all websites take PayPal, either. I'm disappointed when it happens I just go straight to the Amex. The pro and con is it is a flat 2% everywhere else. So at its worst, it's comparable to a wells Fargo active cash (not including introductory bonus) and makes it a good default.

With no fees on normal use, I see these cards more as partners than competitors. Other than store specific 5% off like Amazon, target, Walmart, these are both among the best 0 annual fee everyday cards that should be considered.

Basically saves the step of buying Amazon GCs at the grocery store. I wonder what they were thinking with this though. Seems like it will cannibalize users from BCP. I would definitely downgrade if I hadn't jumped on an upgrade offer a few months ago.
i actually did downgrade from BCP lol
