Because Brother home printers are workhorses. All the Brother printers I've ever owned have been super reliable and work for years and years. All the other brand printers I've owned (e.g., Lexmark, Canon) crapped out, were intermittently unreliable, or needed frequent attention.

In short, buy a monochrome laser for your family. It will save you lots of money. You may wish to consider a wireless printer if there are several users.
Whatever you do, don't buy an inkjet. The ink can actually dry up in less than a month as compared to toner used in a laser printer which is really powder and lasts years. Unless you have a bonafide reason for an inkjet, you'll find them incredibly expensive. For many folks, they are a lose-lose product. If you don't print often, the ink dries out and you'll end up buying new ink cartridges a lot. And if you do print often, you'll also use a lot of ink cartridges which can be quite expensive for some brands.
