For black and white, it's hard to go wrong with the MFCL2750DW, the flagship of Brother's smaller all-in-one series lasers. It's fast, feature-packed, and should last for many years. Cheap to own too. It's a lot of printer for $228, and showing in stock at the moment. Best new price I've seen lately is $299.

These generally come with new sealed "starter" cartridges, but they've been known to send full retail cartridges as well. It's the luck of the draw.

Is the ink expensive for this? We need a printer for the house and we do very little printing but need something that lasts and works.
In addition to the durability of their printers, Brother is also well known for having printers that accommodate third party toner which can be very inexpensive. Many other manufacturers make it difficult for consumers to use anything other than their own expensive supplies.

In short, buy a monochrome laser for your family. It will save you lots of money. You may wish to consider a wireless printer if there are several users.

Whatever you do, don't buy an inkjet. The ink can actually dry up in less than a month as compared to toner used in a laser printer which is really powder and lasts years. Unless you have a bonafide reason for an inkjet, you'll find them incredibly expensive. For many folks, they are a lose-lose product. If you don't print often, the ink dries out and you'll end up buying new ink cartridges a lot. And if you do print often, you'll also use a lot of ink cartridges which can be quite expensive for some brands.

Has inflation hit these printers too? I re-call buying a brother wireless laser during peak WFH time in 2020 for $80 and thought I overpaid for it. Anyway it's worth it. Still on the original toner and does it's job. Apple AirPrint compatible so can print from the phone as well.

What's the difference between MFCL2710DW (Refurbished) and Brother DCP-L2550DW (new)? They are both the same price. What would y'all recommend?
MFC has printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. While, DCP has printing, copying, and scanning.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic or snarled but I genuinely wonder, if these printers are so good, why are the refurbs available so often?
All I can say is the two Brother Lasers I have (HL-2240 and HL-2270DW) have been going strong for 9 years now.

This is correct. The only thing that Ink Jets are better for is if you need to print pictures. If you must get one, get one that allows you to use 3rd party, cheap cartridges.

I'm not sure what your point is. My printer doesn't cost anything now, other than toner replacements (cheap ones that work well on Amazon or eBay).
