There are deals popping up on eBay all the time for 6th and 7th generation Intel CPU desktops with SSD and Windows 10 for less than $100. Seller sent me an offer on eBay item number 394187094679 (search sold items) today for $94.70 shipped, just because I viewed his listing, although it sold since then. It's an Optiplex 5050 SFF, i5-6500, 8GB, 128GB SSD, fresh load of Windows 11.

Check in at eBay regularly and set your search criteria for:

Desktop Computer
Price: less than $100
Sort by: newly listed

Your deal will show up sooner than later. I recently picked up a Dell 3040 SFF ready to go for $60 shipped, and it's a wonderful little machine. Looks brand new as well. And has native 4K HDMI output for my 4K monitor. Good times.

Isn't that the same fan that comes on it already? Do you notice any difference in noise after switching?
The stock one is a 5-blade fan. It's fine under normal load. But once the CPU is at high temp and the fan rev increases, the fan noise becomes very noticeable. The 7-blade Cool Master fan is much quieter.

I did receive mine and the keyboard is kind of a joke. I did not find any Function keys. I think you need to press a function key to get into the bios. Am I missing something?

My notes say hitting Fn + Esc will reverse the keys. I'm pretty sure you have to do this with every reboot, though. I switched to a keyboard that has the old style function keys to avoid the problem.

Thanks, I now see the very tiny Fn keys. I will most likely switch it also with a keyboard from my garage.

Got the cooler master fan from eBay, thanks to NDman.

The original (also cooler master) wasn't loud under normal use. It gets very loud under heavy load. (when it runs > 2000 rpm). The new cooler master is very quiet, I cannot hear it even when it is under heavy load, but it's also not spinning as fast.
I ran Cinebench before and after I replace the fan to compare the noise and CPU temp with the case closed:

Stock CM fan:
  • Max. CPU temp 86C
  • Max. RPM 2973

New CM fan from ebay:
  • Max. CPU temp 89C
  • Max. RPM 1901

I have been trying to test my network speed using wireless. I noticed when streaming Acorn TV with the wireless router less than 18 inches from the machine, using 5G, it seemed to be sputtering with displaying the video. I switched to 2.4G on the same router and it was more consistent. I tried speed test from dslreports and it would not run. So there might need to be some work in this area.

Anybody else have this occur?

I did move the refresh rate to 60 instead of 59 htz and it seems to display a little better for color and clarity.

Thanks so much for posting your results with the new fan. I don't plan on working this Acer to its limits, so the silent fan solution is the perfect fit for me. I just ordered one.

You might try moving your router a little further away and see if that improves your streaming. RF devices can have problems communicating when they are inches away from each other due to sensitive receiver circuitry being overdriven and saturated with high peak to peak signals. Every foot you move them apart exponentially attenuates these signal levels; 10-20 feet apart may be more optimum.

My computer came with Windows 10 already installed. I did a clean re-installation of that. Then there was a prompt in the Windows Update tab that my computer was hardware-capable of an update to Windows 11. A few days later I decided to do the update.

It sounds like maybe your machine didn't come with a Windows 10 software key pre-installed.You can get to Windows 11 with what Acer support is offering, it's just a two-step process, instead of your preferred one step.

Windows 11 is a free upgrade for all hardware-capable Windows 10 computers. There is no reason you should pay for it if you have a Windows 10 key.

Get the cheapest. An off-the-shelf PC like this almost surely doesn't support XMP so the RAM will run at 2666Mhz or 2400Mhz. Without XMP/overclocking this CPU only supports up to 2666MHz. Having two equal size sticks allows dual channel operation.
My machine (this product Acer Aspire XC-1660G-UW92) shows the RAM operating at 2933MHz speeds for a single stick of 3200MHz 8GB of Samsung memory. I know that this product is not XMP enabled, but if I go to 2 stick 16 GB memory, should I hunt for 2933 sticks or just use suboptimal ones because the PC will not realize the benefit? Many thanks.

Mr. Jelly summed it up nicely. You shouldn't need to do any transcoding with local playback. If you have huge MKV files or the like, you'll want to have fast connections to everything (preferably hardwire). The good news is that you won't be relying on your INTERNET speeds, but rather your INTRANET speeds. So even if your internet provider doesn't give you a fast connection or your cable modem is antiquated... it's irrelevant for the purposes of playback in your home as it would be your router's capabilities (range and speed) if you're tapping into it via Wi-Fi. Again, hadwire is preferred, but ... that's not possible with phones. Naturally, a fast INTERNET connection is a plus so if you're on the road and want to watch movies... or at your parents' house for the holidays and want to veg on the couch, you can just pull up your collection.

And you're gonna want to get a spinner hard drive. 256GB isn't nearly big enough to run a Plex server AND house the contents. So either add an internal spinner or an external HDD (I'd go for at least 8 TB to make it worth your while)... or a cheap external NAS. Doesn't need much of a processor, if any, as this Acer would be doing the work.

And just my .02? Do some research on SiliconDust Home Run HD adapters. I got a "cable card" from Xfinity. They authorized my cable package to it. I pop it in the adapter... and then get it on my network. Plex recognizes it, scans the channels available to me... and then with Plex Pass, I can watch TV through Plex on the go... and even DVR channels (watch + record up to three channels at a time).

Holler if you have more questions. Smilie
I finally installed Plex lifetime on this machine tonight. I had watched videos on setting up the Silicon Dust devices and it works very well. Now I want to share the channels with my daughter and I cannot get the remote access to work. I am using the Windows 10 as configured. It currently is connected to a 16 port unmanaged switch (TP-Link). The switch connects to the AT&T modem. I also have two routers that are connected to the switch for providing wireless to the house. At some point I will most likely disconnect the Windows machine from hardwire and go to wireless. I need the space around my desk.

I have not installed any storage or put any tv or movies on it. I am looking for cheap storage.

Any help in getting the remote to work?

Thanks for the info. it came with win 10 pre installed and Acer also gave me a key over the phone for if I wanted to do a clean install. I didn't realize the upgrade was free, and was trying to determine if i could do a clean install of win 11 to avoid the "upgrade".

What process did you follow to do the clean install of win 10? i want to get rid of al the pre istalled software.

To be honest, that's where I struggle. Plex recently had an issue where some PII was breached and so they forced everyone to change their passwords. So many people did it at the same time, it started crashing their authentication servers. And when I finally could get back in, it was saying my remote access didn't work. I read a handful of FAQs, but everything appeared to be fine on my end. Eventually (a few hours later), it started working again without me actually changing anything.

Also, if you can help it, don't go wireless. That's not causing your remote access issue, but... if you start streaming high-bitrate media, you could run into lag issues. If nothing else, when you're fast forwarding and/or rewinding through DVR'ed content, you want it to be as snappy as possible.
