There are deals popping up on eBay all the time for 6th and 7th generation Intel CPU desktops with SSD and Windows 10 for less than $100. Seller sent me an offer on eBay item number 394187094679 (search sold items) today for $94.70 shipped, just because I viewed his listing, although it sold since then. It's an Optiplex 5050 SFF, i5-6500, 8GB, 128GB SSD, fresh load of Windows 11.

Check in at eBay regularly and set your search criteria for:

Desktop Computer
Price: less than $100
Sort by: newly listed

Your deal will show up sooner than later. I recently picked up a Dell 3040 SFF ready to go for $60 shipped, and it's a wonderful little machine. Looks brand new as well. And has native 4K HDMI output for my 4K monitor. Good times.

Thanks for the info. it came with win 10 pre installed and Acer also gave me a key over the phone for if I wanted to do a clean install. I didn't realize the upgrade was free, and was trying to determine if i could do a clean install of win 11 to avoid the "upgrade".

What process did you follow to do the clean install of win 10? i want to get rid of al the pre istalled software.
I did the cloud-based reinstall of Windows where you don't need to back it up physically before you start. It takes a little while, and you will hear the turbojet of a fan spinning loudly, but it's all automatic and leaves you with Windows 10 minus the Acer bloatware.

Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Recovery Options > Reset This PC

Looking for a cheap desktop for my kid to play Fortnite on. Is this the best option? I don't see many in the $100 range with SSDs and good specs unless I'm missing something.

I have the i5 version of this and recently replaced the CPU fan with a Noctua NF-A9 PWM chromax.

Note, it is NOT a direct bolt up replacement. I designed and 3D printed a fan adapter to go from the 71.5mm stock fan bolt spacing to the larger shroud on the Noctua and 82.5mm bolt spacing. The Noctua is a massive upgrade. No more vibration and no more noise. It is smooth and dead silent and runs much less than teh stock fan. When it does run it cools CPU temps FAST.

If anyone has a 3D printer and is interested in this conversion, I can post up the files on printables and share the details.

Edit: Below printables link I uploaded the files for my 3D printed adapter to replace the stock CPU fan with a Noctua NF-A9 PWM.

Thanks for the Step file!

The stock one is a 5-blade fan. It's fine under normal load. But once the CPU is at high temp and the fan rev increases, the fan noise becomes very noticeable. The 7-blade Cool Master fan is much quieter.
The new one is a huge improvement! Thanks for the tip!

How's your PSU fan noise? That one also makes a somewhat unpleasant sound on mine haha

No problem! If you use it, let me know how it works out or if there's any changes you would suggest.

I was tipped off by someone else on the other thread but glad it helped!

My PSU fan is fine. Nothing bad that I could notice. But the computer is in a somewhat higher traffic area (i.e. not a quiet room) so that's a non-factor.

To be honest, that's where I struggle. Plex recently had an issue where some PII was breached and so they forced everyone to change their passwords. So many people did it at the same time, it started crashing their authentication servers. And when I finally could get back in, it was saying my remote access didn't work. I read a handful of FAQs, but everything appeared to be fine on my end. Eventually (a few hours later), it started working again without me actually changing anything.

Also, if you can help it, don't go wireless. That's not causing your remote access issue, but... if you start streaming high-bitrate media, you could run into lag issues. If nothing else, when you're fast forwarding and/or rewinding through DVR'ed content, you want it to be as snappy as possible.
I reached out to the community and received two responses today. I will be reviewing them over the weekend and see if something needs tweaking. It comes up for remote, sometimes, and then terminates.

Also do you know if you can share the live broadcast from a homerun device via remote?

I don't believe so. I just double checked my "Manage Library Access" area... and it lets my share my libraries with other users... but I don't see anything that would allow me to share my Live stream via the HDHomeRun Prime. Which kinda makes sense. Cable providers would be piss if they let you take your authenticated stream and blast it outside of your home to other folks.

Thanks for checking. My daughter just moved to a remote area with 3 stations. Was hoping to improve that for her. But it does not surprise me... it is as expected.

You get what you pay for.

I brought this and got it the other day. No video output. Requested to return. Hopefully others didn't get a dead useless PC like I did.

Do you mean that both of the HDMI ports on the back of the computer were dead? You are aware that most modern computers don't have VGA or DVI out ports anymore on the back of the computer? I only ask because I myself assumed there would be a DVI out port on this very computer, and found out after taking delivery that I needed to buy an additional cable for it to work with my old-school monitor.

The computer came with 2 HDMI ports and neither worked. I have 5 computer monitors and none of them worked and tried with multiple cables as well. Frown

Wow, that sucks. From the description, Anker makes it seem that these desktops have really been thoroughly gone over, but it's probably more of like an open-box return situation, where they maybe plug these into an outlet to make sure they power up, and then consider it all good if it does.
