Honestly the best clip on tuners I've used are also the cheapest- the D'Addario Micro's. They're under $20 and frequently on sale for $11-$14. They're tiny, accurate, easy to read, you can keep them on the guitar while you put them in the case, and use a watch battery that lasts for years, so...that's my .02.
I know what you mean about some tuners not working well with some instruments though. I have never had that issue with this tuner, and I think I have about 45ish stringed instruments at the moment (obviously haven't used this with all of them).

I had the sn-1. The thing was accurate but the display died after a few years. Also it was button cell vs rechargeable, which is a matter or preference for some.
The Fender tuner is a little bit bigger than a Snark and has a folding hinge rather than a ball joint. I tried both my Snark and the Fender tuner at the same time on a Fender Stratocaster and a Squier Telecaster. Both read the same as far as tuning goes. The Fender tuner is brighter and easier to read. Both look clunky and are visually awkward attached to the headstock. The Fender having a rechargeable battery is nice, but once it quits charging, it will have to be tossed in the trash. I prefer replaceable batteries to built-in; however, only time will tell.
I have a Peterson Stobostomp on my pedalboard, tuners built into amps, other brand of clip-ons, and apps on my phone. My go-to for convenience is typically a clip-on tuner.
For the price the Fender tuner seems to be pretty equivalent to the Snark. I might even order another.
