I've owned every version of Firesticks /Fire TVs except the cubes. I also own an Apple TV 4k (2017). My Shield is the 2017 version. My breakdown below:

Firestick 4k Max: Best bang for your buck streamer. Can be found on sale for around $35.

Pros:
  • Affordable
  • Supports every iteration of HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG)
  • AV1 support
  • Can play Youtube HDR
  • Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc.)
  • Wifi 6
Cons:
  • UI is ad-supported
  • Needs additional hardware to run ethernet and increase storage
  • No bitstreaming of HD audio
  • Occasionally needs to be rebooted

Apple TV 4K: Best pure streamer. 2021 model can be found on sale for $120-$130

Pros:
  • Very fluid UI. Fastest, smoothest navigation
  • No ads (mostly) There is autoplay enabled to some of their music video selection
  • Airplay 2. If you have Airplay 2 devices this makes multi room audio incredibly easy
  • Gigabit Ethernet
Cons:
  • Locked down to apple's ecosystem (No Kodi, etc.)
  • No usb ports for storage or game controllers
  • No HDR10+
  • No AV1 support
  • No Youtube HDR

Nvidia Shield: Swiss-army knife of streamers. Can be found on sale for $170

Pros:
  • Great for game emulators
  • 64 bit Android (can run Dolphin emulator, Kodi 64 bit, etc)
  • Has usb ports for storage, game controllers, webcams, etc
  • Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc)
  • Can use Google Duo with supported webcam
  • Can run Plex server
  • Can run Channels DVR server
  • Bitstreams HD audio
  • AI upscaling (I do not have this version)
  • Gigabit ethernet
Cons:
  • Ad-supported
  • Last update introduced many issues (I did not update)
  • No HDR10+
  • No Youtube HDR
  • Occasionally needs to be rebooted
I'm sure I missed a few things but this is a general idea. I have a use case for all three streamers so I have them all connected to my main display. It really comes down to personal use case. I'm personally hoping NVidia upgrades the Shield to support AV1, HDR10+ and Youtube HDR. That would eliminate my need for the Firestick 4K Max. Being able to have the game on and airplay to other rooms makes the Apple TV 4K a keeper to me.

Hope this helps

I've been holding off on buying one of these for a long time because I didn't want a passthrough device just to be able to watch 4K Plex content on my TCL TV. However, seeing the praise it's getting, I'll be keeping an eye out for a new version to release hopefully this year. As it stands now, my TV can't stream the content fast enough to do true 4K (~75MB/s required, and the TV sits less than a foot above my gigabit router. TCL sucks for this one shortcoming in particular.)
Even when hardwired?

The only reason I want this is for ATMOS/TrueHD from plex on my LG C9 but I don't know if 180 bucks and an entire new device is worth that...

Using mi box and Amazon fire stick for streaming. bought this Shield for testing and returned. The feel was nice, but my cheaper alternatives won.

Wow, talking about the NVIDIA Shield is almost as divisive as talking politics or religion. Yeah, I own several shields, 2015 and 2017 versions and yes they are great if using as a Plex server, emulating and game playing.

I have found that other devices are better for me for certain streaming apps, so I use them when it fits my needs. I don't hate on the other devices, I have pretty much owned them all. It's user choice as to what floats their boat.

Over the years the Shield has been fantastic on upgrades but this last one, 9.xx was an absolute disaster. I had to manually roll back to 8.2.3 on 3 devices, this has pretty much left a bad impression on me.

That being said, I still believe that the shield is top of the food chain when it comes to CUSTOMIZABLE, powerful Android based media boxes. If you can afford it and have a need for it, go for it. If not, or you don't want it, then that's OK too. It's a matter of what works for you.

This is a good price and if you have the Chase offer for 20% (Max $20) on any of your cards, then you can get this for around $150. Not too bad if you are in the market.
The same type of debate typically occurs when someone posted a $200 rice cooker and people started saying they can easily do the same thing with a $30 rice cooker. Applause

You are proof that people have no troubles buying these things even at regular prices. At merely a 15% discount, they get a big bump in sales and a reduction in inventories. I doubt they're still manufacturing this model. They're lucky that when a new model eventually comes out, they probably won't have to unload huge inventories of this model. Continuous 15% off deals might just do it.

When a new model does come it, assuming it's with more resources than 3GB/16GB, etc., it'll have to be priced more. Most people buy phones with a minimum of 4GB of main memory these days. Plus, Nvidia will be looking for ways to bring in more service revenues through other service offerrings within the shield. The ultimate achievement would be to announce a new product that is so great that it makes everyone with previous models want to upgrade. The AI 4K upscaling in this one did get some people to upgrade. I wonder what else they could add. It could be for Black Friday, or a year from now, or possibly never. Everyone else is going to get continuously better at media streaming, so Nvidia should focus on where it stands out - as a media server and in gaming.

Seems like any old retired computer you have from the past ten years will do a better job than this.
LOL, no it will not. A lot of people in this thread need to realize how powerful the GPU in this thing is. You need a lot of horsepower in a PC for madvr to come close to this thing for upconverting videos.

People want to have good feelz about their $170 streaming device.

To this day they haven't stopped me from installing Kodi on it. Maybe that day will come soon, but for now it works.
Guess ignorance is bliss for some. All other streaming devices have a bunch of drawbacks whether it's video and/or audio capabilities. This thing checks all boxes for most of us.

My 2015 plays DTS.
When he said "only model" believe he meant the nvidia shield (no other streaming device, but the roku acutally does from personal experience but that has a lot of other drawbacks). Plus you would need a time machine to get the 2015 model you have unless you buy it used.

This vs the 2017 shield? What's the main reason to upgrade.
