Like all WD external drives, these have a high failure rate. Lot of it from the bad connectors/cable.

If you must buy this make sure the cable fits into the box without having to force it or being wiggly. Do not buy these if you will be connecting/disconnecting regularly - high probability of not getting one of those connections right and encountering the click of death.

Before use run a reasonable write to entire disk test that will most likely bring out early death tendencies if any. Don't sit on the drive without using it for close to 30 days and then cry cannot return the drive to Amazon if it is DOA. Smilie

This and the My Passport drive are basically the same drive. Yet, for some reason I'll only buy My Passport.

Why put 5tb of data on a disposible drive? Last week we saw the Seagate 5tb for $85 at target and $90 at Costco. paying more for a disposible drive?.. If it is just games easily downloaded again, I guess, but it will take quite some time to do it. If you can shuck the drive, you can attempt to save the data. These are non shuckable. Might as well get the WD refurb deal..

I have 2 WD 4tb externals I have been using for a long time. 1 for over 5 years and 1 for over 3 years.

1 is connected to my Xbox and the other is taken with me on the road. Both are going strong.

The Xbox one only gets disconnected (both ends) when I take it on the road. The other one gets disconnected and reconnected constantly. Neither one has shown any signs of failing.

The quality of these things has changed over that length of time.

Don't know when they switched the connector/cabling but the currently available ones are crap. You will find many reviews where people bought on previous experience a while back but were disappointed to see them failing. I think the drives themselves are fine but the connectors are integrated with the drive.

These don't have standard sata connectors. Get seagate instead of you need 2.5 hd... At least you will be able to get your data out in case USB connector go bad
