I'm a software developer and I use this 8gb mac mini at home.

My swap (with 48 days of uptime) is 3-4GB. Just because it's in swap doesn't mean it's actively writing/reading from the swap.

Here's a graph of my swap over time, and ALSO how much swap reads and writes over the course of an hour.

Memory swap isn't bad.. It's like a tiered memory storage... It's only bad if it's actively trying to utilize the swap with read/writes, but it takes a lot of those to hurt the ssd.

This is with discord + vscode + spotify + chrome + occasional FT. 8gb M1 256gb.

I agree w/ you but to be fair most people (e.g. Mom & Dad) who buy this model will never notice the difference. M1 seems to use RAM more efficiently and it's blazing fast.
Only $20 more at Costco and more accessible for most people.

8GB on an M1 is not a problem at all, it is much more memory efficient than Windows PCs with 16GB+.

M2, based on how they are pricing the M2 MBAs are going to be $200 more. Not worth it for that minor bump.

You may have forgotten that Macs recently ran on Intel CPUs. This let's you make an "apples to apples" comparison between the hardware using the same MacOS version.

What you will find is that any given app occupies roughly the same amount of memory on both platforms.
I've owned macs since the early PPC days, but you're still missing the point.

Idk what your mom and dad are doing with their PCs, but my dad has been using an i3 2100 for over ten years with 4gb of ram (+60gb ssd), and a few years ago I upgraded it to 8gb. They just browse FB and watch youtube lol. I've been meaning to upgrade their PCs but... they're not complaining.

Also, 16gb is $200 more...

Oh no. My folks can't use what your folks are using, nor this with only 8 of RAM. 16 would be the minimum as they're doing more on a computer than your folks.

But you've reinforced my point. You upgraded their machine in ways you can't do with this. And are they still running W7 and you're letting them go in the internet?

Bought this last year. First Mac, and its a effing BEAST. Runs my plex server with ease, even on the 8gb model. I have up to five users at a time on plex with no sweat (1080p max content, no 4k). I have never once heard the fan kick on on this thing, other than tinkering with fan control software.

I love it.

For the Windows user, you will find this 8GB Mac is very slow for some traditional Windows Apps. For example, ThinkorSwim is running pretty smooth on my 10 years old ThinkPad laptop, but it keeps freezing and crashing when I use this 8GB Mac Min. Same thing happens to several of my friends. So I returned it by the end.
ToS uses a lot of memory and is a Java app, so the JVM isn't probably optimized for ARM or it has to do JIT translation on x86 instruction set. I tried to use VM and tastyworks (also in Java) with no success so I built a slamming x86 machine with 32 gb for under $1000 with an RTX that does the job and I run 3-4 VM at the same time. I had to turn in my Macbook m2 for an i7 2020 to do proper dev and VM.

For most people this is a fine machine but if you use specific apps or want to do real dev this may not be the right platform. 8 GB is minimal and the lower SSD also have half the channels. Apple really gimps the entry-level devices so they are barely adequate and wants you to shell out premium $$$ to get a rig that will last.

I mean how many people are using this just to surf the net when they can do it on an ipad? People who actually buy computers now a days usually do it intentionally and a powerful one such as this.

Despite this being a different beast and using memory how it does, 8GB was not enough for me using excel for work on a core i7 laptop/thinkpad. I had to get at least 16GB for it not to shudder and lag.

I use my computer for work-from-home. When my funds replenish from employer for allotment, I'll be buying a mac mini as it my hackintosh is too cumbersome to update.

If your swap needs regular reading or writing then your system is basically undersized. Of course it depends on how you use it, but 8gb is very little for this day and age.

This is pretty much the original M1 macbook pro in the 'mini' form. Great performance for the price. I have the M1 macbook air (same machine, minus a GPU core) and have been happy with the performance.

I had a 2011 iMac 27in that I maxed out and paid nearly $3k for. I had been exclusively PC prior. The thing had a white screen of death and all the fixes and workarounds wouldn't work. Likely a bad graphics card for which if I replaced with the new, same one for ~600, it would still eventually fail. I have gfx cards that are 20 years old. I'm done with their computers M2 or M2 chip, intel's offerings will be enough and you can use them with Windows.
Had the same exact iMac, maxed out on ram, etc. It finally went down, likely same issue as yours. I replaced it with a 16GB M1 Mac mini about a year ago and I haven't looked back. Great little machine. I have to believe the iMacs will always be a ticking time bomb with the way they're built. So much going on in those things and such little air flow.

With OpenCore, all my hackintoshes (laptops and desktops) have had the same painless System Preferences update as Mac hardware since Big Sur. Don't even need to stick around for reboots during update installs. No more messing around with extensions on OS drive. It is pretty much like running MacOS on VMWare as a virtual machine.

Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a Mac for home use instead of using my MacBook pro daily, will this be faster than my A1990 MacBook pro? I do heavy video editing in 4k. My MacBook works good, I'm sure this will handle it just fine?
