After you buy/install these, load up Samsung Magician to ensure they're authentic and then check the total TB written. Had an "open box" drive that had a total of 200 power on hours, but over 40TB written in that time, which is roughly 200GB per hour writing nonstop for over a week. My drive was likely used for chia/pharming, or maybe some prosumer workload, but that's definitely not typical of "normal" use. By comparison, my oldest SSD drive has over 8000 power on hours and barely hit 20TB written.

does chia farming really use that much data? seems like most of it would be static.

It does. If you have a 2tb SSD in writing nonstop to bigger 10-30tb hard drives, it'll quickly write those speeds no question in a very short amount of time.
