I grabbed the Target 20% off coupon for college students, so it brought the price down to $232 (pre-tax).
Target has a similar deal but includes Elden Ring.
The madden series is one of the saddest franchises in all of gaming. Lazy money machine. Features taken out. As Vince Vaughn once said "don't do it"

I really only wanted it to play franchise mode offline. Does that play okay on the recent maddens? I have no interest in online playing. The last version I played was from 2008 and gameplay was excellent, but graphics are dated.

GPU also includes EA play. You can play Madden 21 and 22 for free right now. It includes a 10 hour free trial for Madden 23, which will eventually be added to play for free as well, typically 8-10 months after release. If you like the trial, they give like a 10% discount to purchase it. Besides EA, there are a lot of Ubisoft games on there currently, most MS 1st party games, most Bethesda games, and much more. Regardless of your preferred game style, there is something for everyone. Although if your only interest is Madden 23, probably not worth it for you.

Could I buy the system with the free game and sell the console? The free digital game is an entirely separate code right?

Nope, Microsoft police will come to your house. Plus, the game is handcuffed to the system. You can't remove it without destroying both the game and system.

I heard if you sell the console and try to keep the game it creates a wormhole in the spacetime continuum. Wouldn't risk it.

You could but the market for series S is not that hot, doubt you would get this much for it. Has already been sold new multiple times for $250.

What would be the best supscription to buy? GPU? Is XBox live worth it? I haven't had a console since PS2 so these subscriptions are new to me

Folks are waiting for BF, but I doubt we will see $200 this year. Probably lots of bunduru with digital games at $250. I was waiting for M$ to go down to the $250 mark, thus making it $200 with gift cards. However, I got impatient and paid $400 for the Series X instead, along with a new 120Hz TV I picked up for an insane price.

I honestly don't see many huge improvements over my One S and "old" TV with the Series X and new one. Load times are a bit shorter, some games look a tad better, but nothing has been life-changing at all. If my One S hadn't been having a few issues here and there with external storage or I hadn't got the TV so cheap, I'd probably have some remorse.

EA killed football gaming in general. They killed burnout... They are just terrible... Then 2K decided to follow and kill basketball games...

Never buy sports games...

Anyone think it's worth it for Madden 23? I haven't played Madden in 15 years. Do you think it's worth giving it a try, or will I be disappointed? The visuals look really good.
For offline franchise mode...no.

But I was in a similar situation a few years ago having not played Madden in 10+ years and fondly remembered playing franchise back in the day. I got whatever new Madden and ended up just skipping on franchise and playing Madden Ultimate Team (MUT) which is the newer thing albeit old now (Madden Mobile on console if you've tried that...if not, a game mode with card packs and fantasy team building and grinding activities).

It's fun to play along with the ongoing season since it has weekly promos matching up with what's going on during the season, holiday events, and they release progressively better cards/players throughout the season...so you'd need the new version. I had a good time playing that for a season...then I picked up Madden the next year and dipped out right away because I didn't feel like starting from zero and going through all the grinding again.

If MUT on console had multiplayer league vs league like on mobile...I'd probably give it another go. I don't think it had that when I played it...not sure if they ever added it. You could also just try Madden Mobile this year and if you like it try it (MUT mode) on console the next year. But yeah, outside of any interest in MUT mode, save the $70 and get a different game and/or play an older Madden.

If you decide it sounds like it is worth it, you can get GPU for pretty cheap. Basically, Microsoft will still convert 100% of your Xbox gold subscription to GPU for as little as a $1.00 conversion fee.

To do this you first buy as much or as little Xbox live gold as you want. You can stack up to 3 years worth. Buy the gold from wherever you can get it cheapest, search Slickdeals for deals.

After you have the gold and enter it into your Xbox account, there will be a tile on the Xbox that allows you to convert it. Basically it is just signing up for GPU, and when you do it, MS will convert all your gold time to GPU, giving you up to 3 yrs for whatever they charge you for a conversion fee. MS usually has a deal for brand new subscribers for $1. The normal price of GPU is $14.99 per month.

GPU gives all these features:

•Access to Xbox live gold so you can play online
•Access to Xbox gamepass games, which include EA titles, Ubisoft titles, 1st Party MS titles including Bethesda games now, and many more AAA and indie games which come and go.
•PC gamepass games if you have a PC you can play games on
•Access to cloud gaming, where you can play games in the cloud from your Xbox, tablet, or even phone
•Access to remote play, which allows you to stream games from your Xbox to a tablet, phone, or other device

Gives you a ton. I pay on average less than $5 per month all said and done.
