Datasheets aside, backblaze tends to record a noticeably higher failure rate with Seagate than with WD.

Good price point at $15/TB

Know why the BB listing is a different model? WD140EFFX vs WD140EFGX

Can't find whether the BB listing has CMR or not.

EDIT: Has CMR. Don't see a clear difference on this WD chart
https://documents.westerndigital....us-hdd.pdf

The only difference was this footnote: Actual spindle motor rotational speed for this model is 7200 RPM; although ID Device may report 5400 to reflect previous Performance Class designation.

I would avoid this drive after looking at the datasheet: https://documents.westerndigital....us-hdd.pdf

It has 1,000,000 hours MTBF, a 3 year warranty and only rated for 180TB/year.

The Seagate ST14000NM001G 14TB drive has a 2,500,000 hours MTBF, a 5 year warranty and rated for 550TB/year. It has been on sale for $200 recently but is currently ~$230 at most etailers. I would pay an extra $20 to have a much better drive.

550TB/year vs 180TB/year indicates different levels of standards. To me it translates Robust vs Acceptable, but less robust. And what do we want for a hard drive? Robust.
You can drive a tank or a Honda. You got extra protection with the tank, but most people don't need it.

If we are talking about hard drives, I wish they could build them like a tank. especially if the "tank" is only $20 more.

It was a known chip issue they ignored and it died in 4 years. I was able to fix it but only long enough to transfer everything. So I'm just not happy with them and all of my friends have Synology and are happy. It seems they are slow to update their hardware to the newest but otherwise solid.
I literally just had this happen to me. First I got hit by bootlocker ransomware and had to recover things from backups, then the whole thing just died and I learned about the Intel chipset flaw.

Can you provide a link to this flaw. I have 2 Qnaps and 2 expansion chassis.

Cmr is better than smr for Nas storage, right? Always forget the distinction.

For those of us with less data to backup, the 8TB WD Red Plus is also priced relatively low ($130) right now at the WD website: https://www.westerndigital.com/pr...d#WD80EFZZ

Wow, that's awful. Between that and the QNAP ransomware stuff.....not a good look.

Bug that prematurely kills hardware basically when the CPU is used a lot over time. Good thing the CPUs that were affected were designed for use in devices that tend to last a long time (signs, medical devices, NAS units, etc). /sarcasm

I take you points, but if you read the comments in the recent seagate thread, you'll see tons of people trashing the Seagate and recommending to go WD instead. It's funny how in every HDD deal there are people who would complain about the reliability of that specific manufacturer.
I guess IRL both are pretty close. I ordered two 14tb WD Reds for my new DS920 and one of them was DOA. I ordered one Exos and now I have one WD and one Seagate spinning in the NAS. Will see which one dies first, haha 😆

Quick question: what is the difference of Red Plus vs Red Pro? It seems that the Pro version features a better warranty (5 vs 3 years)?

Thanks!

Care to say why you're switching to Synology? I've been considering it as well. Just tired of the qnap interface and mine is getting old & slow
About a year ago QNAP suffered a major security breach in its NAS's. In fairness those that had not updated firmware for quite some time were the ones most affected. But then shortly after that one bay on my QNAP died. I moved to Synology, the whole experience is better. No regrets, and I'm not going back to QNAP for any reason.

Perfect time for me to kickoff a mini project. Grabbed 2 14 TB Plus models that will go into a Synology DS920+. Only when a Deal Alert goes off for NAS, of course. Smilie
