I don't see a difference between using this and just putting the items on the counter. In fact, the glass containers seem more unsafe raised up, and my wider items won't fit...

It intended more smaller items such as spices in a cabinet. By raising the items in the back you can find what you're looking for easily
As a heads up for those intending to use it for spices, it seems like a good idea... until you bump a jar on the top shelf and it tumbles down into a lower shelf and you've got spice dominos falling on you. Ask me how I know. Get one where each shelf has short 1" walls.
