They're both nearly identical in reliability, after several units owned, tested, and saw them died by me from Galanz and Midea manufacturers. The only benefit found in Black & Decker is it comes with a white LED interior lamp for cooking, instead of a yellow halogen. All Galanz-made 700W and 900W microwaves use the regular, yellow halogen lamp, not LED lamp. 1000W and above may use LED lamp for the expensive models.

Galanz is the first and oldest microwave manufacturer in China and have the most experience in microwave manufacturing for over 30 years now, but most of the brands are for the lower-end market. Midea is a recent-entry manufacturer for microwaves with not much proven history, but it's a diverse corporation and now bigger than Galanz. Midea is usually priced higher than Galanz with more features included, and often better-quality parts used that may last a tiny-bit longer than Galanz.

Also, Galanz packs their microwave in retail-box better than Midea, and it has a higher-chance for safe delivery to your door. The Black & Decker (Midea) microwaves are more likely to get damaged in shipping than Proctor Silex (Galanz), due to Midea's lack of proven history for microwave manufacturing, and wrong packing material quality used. Midea is still learning how to build the greatest microwave oven, while Galanz is already finished with all that research.

The best place to buy a new 700W or 900W microwave (Mainstays, Proctor Silex, and Hamilton Beach) is at Walmart stores. It comes with a 1-year free exchange policy with receipt provided to the store, no questions asked. But at Target, it's only 90-day return policy max, no 1-year exchange policy.

On the Insignias, look at the back of the microwave oven from store-shelf display, and find the FCC-ID code on the specification sticker. If it says "UHW," it's made by Galanz. If it's "VG8," it's made by Midea. If it's "C5F," it's made by Daewoo (now renamed into Winia company).

Great prices. Typical similar microwaves are generally $50+ for 700 watt and $70+ for 1000 watt.

these cheap microwaves don't last. the magnetron will stop working in a year or two guaranteed, usually less time than that with daily use. I learned the hard way with 2 similar units that both stopped working within one year. instead of getting another, I turned to craigslist and bought a used Sharp Carousel from the 1990's for $10. Thing is an unstoppable tank. I use it 4 times a day, everyday, mostly for boiling water and reheating coffee and after 6 years of that abuse, it is still going and going . It's also large, powerful, and has a rotating dishwasher proof carousel plate. The magnetron in it is top quality Japanese made. Don't buy this junk - do what I did and you will save hundreds.

Most countertop microwaves in the US are made by Midea, relabeled for different brands. Doubt that these perform any better or worse than other common brands such as Hamilton Beach, Toshiba (yes, really), Black and Decker, GE (yes, really), Whirlpool (yes, really), Sharp (yes, really), Breville, Insignia, and Magic Chef. While it may be shocking, countertop microwaves for most of the well-known brands among those above are a very small component of their business and not worth developing their own supply chains for, thus they simply buy white labeled appliances from Midea to fill out their product lineup as cheaply as possible.
I noticed you didn't include Proctor Silex in the above list. Does Proctor Silex not use Midea and worse in quality/reliability? Is that why it's $25 less than the comparable Black & Decker?

I can confirm having both an Insignia and B&D microwave that the insides seem identical, both behave the same way, make the same noise, and the only differences I can spot are minor cosmetic ones on the front.

Having read many of the reviews, I believe you. It's all the more reason to consider these disposable after 1-2 years and not pay a lot of money, especially if they are all (mostly?) the same Midea unit inside. I'd get the Proctor Silex if anyone could confirm it's the same Midea insides as the other brands mentioned.

Proctor Silex is owned by the same company that owns Hamilton Beach. So I'm gonna say yes, these are also Midea units.

They're actually made by Galanz in China, and Galanz is the #1 world's largest microwave oven manufacturer by volume, not Midea. Midea produce the more-expensive models for various brands, including Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sharp.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galanz

All Proctor Silex microwaves are made by Galanz. Proctor Silex brand is now owned by Galanz. Black & Decker microwaves are made by Midea with a slightly higher price. Insignia brand microwaves from Best Buy are made either by the two companies. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for all those details. Given that Black & Decker = Midea and Proctor Silex = Galanz, do you think a Galanz microwave is significantly less reliable than a Midea one? IOW, is the Black & Decker equivalent worth an extra ~$20 over the Proctor Silex?

Also, is there a way to tell by looking at an Insignia microwave who made it?

It has to come with some warranty. I thought I saw 1 year under the More Info section. If the final price is under $50, an Allstate 2 year warranty is $5. I have no idea how good that warranty is.

No. Hamilton Beach is its own company and publicly traded on the NYSE. (HBB).

It was briefly owned by NACCO Industries. During that time, NACCO also bought Proctor and Silex, then merged the two together. Galanz does not own either HBB or Proctor and Silex.

Back in 2009, HBB did have an exclusive agreement with Galanz to manufacture microwaves for both HB and PS brands. However, the agreement had since expired and HBB contracted Midea. Not sure if the contract fully replaced Galanz or simply divided them into markets (e.g., Midea for North America, Galanz for other regions). That's why NY Times concluded that Midea makes microwaves for all of the brands listed above.

Hamilton Beach and Proctor Silex are companies that make some products but then license their names for other products. As others have pointed out, for microwave ovens, the names are licensed to Chinese company Galanz. Galanz reportedly makes about half the microwave ovens sold in the world (not necessarily in the US).
Proctor Silex microwaves are rated 5 out of 5 for reliability at Consumer Reports. This is based on owner data they gather a couple times each year from subscribers. The problem with the user reviews at Target, WM and Amazon is that people are much more likely to complain than go to the trouble to write a review for something that just unglamorously does its job. So the CR ratings should be more accurate.
However Proctor Silex (and its sibling Hamilton Beach) get a rating of 2 out of 5 at CR for "customer satisfaction". Not clear why that is. The models from Proctor / Hamilton Beach / Galanz that they actually test are OK, midrange.

These small, inexpensive, m-waves are good for power outages when using a small inverter generator. I made a kit with a couple extension cords, m-wave, extension cord y-splitter... that is used for PGE outages. Unplug the fridge and plug in the m-wave or hot plate.

Sorry, more on who makes these: I looked at design details in photos, and Galanz and Proctor Silex had the same control panels, embossing on the inner panel behind the door, and left side vent details.
Then I looked on ebay and the parts available for Proctor Silex (door switches and magnetrons) were clearly labeled "Galanz" or else Galanz was listed as another application.

I looked again at CR reviews and the Galanz / Hamilton Beach / Proctor Silex countertop models generally test well. The Black & Decker brand rates 4 out of 5 for "predicted reliability" and the same poor 2 out of 5 for "owner satisfaction" as the Hamilton Beach and Proctor brand.

Maybe someone will post FCC numbers on the ones carried at Target.
