Southwest rules on Companion Fare:
https://www.southwest.c
The Promotional Companion Pass is valid from January 4 to March 4, 2023 and allows you to designate one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) on flights purchased by you, from January 4 to March 4, 2023, booked through Southwest, and completed between January 4 and March 4, 2023. No Rapid Rewards points or tier or Companion Pass qualifying points will be awarded for flights taken by the Companion when flying on a Promotional Companion Pass or Companion Pass reservation. You may change your designated Companion up to three times while you have Promotional Companion Pass. If you earn Companion Pass in 2023 by earning 125,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying flights, any changes to your designated Companion during the time you have a Promotional Companion Pass will reduce the number of changes you can make to your designated Companion in the 2023 calendar year. For example, if you earn a Promotional Companion Pass through this promotion, change your designated Companion twice during the validity period for Promotional Companion Pass, and later in 2023 earn Companion Pass, you would only be able to change your designated Companion one more time in 2023. Companion Pass is non-transferable.
Southwest flight credits:
https://www.southwest.c
Flight credits unexpired on or created on or after July 28, 2022 will not expire. No action is required on your part! If you have unexpired flight credits as of July 28, they will not expire and are available for you to use.

I have a trip planned to Mexico in February. Spending $150 on two flights now would save me a round trip ticket to cancun next February. ( basically buying a round trip for 150)

Assuming we can get the passes, could we take two future trips this winter, one where he is my companion and one where I am his companion?

Literally just got off phone with SWA about this. I had 2 tickets purchased same time and she said they had to be purchased separately. She was very nice and did everything for me (Cancelled and rebooked same flights to show 2 separate purchases) and im all set. My friend and I will each get a companion pass credited to our accounts in January. supposedly.

Flight #1 (September) increased from $224.21 to $445.96, but departing flight is within a 14-day range of today.
Flight #2 (October) increased from $180.84 to $292.96, departing flight is over 31 days from today.
Flight #3 (December, outside of this promo window by two weeks) price did not change at all.
Obviously flight costs have many other factors involved but I found it interesting that both flights within the promo period are substantially higher. The first I'd expect, the second not so much.

Once you get your companion pass, you can set your son as your companion and he can set you as his, though I will say that feels kind of wasted unless you don't have anyone else to assign to the second pass. I will say this, you may need to read the fine print though...i'm not 100% certain your son qualifies as he isn't 18. Not sure why that matters but I know how legal teams work and this can sometimes be stipulated. Just check.
