All-time low at Amazon @ $175.10:

Freud 16 Pcs. Precision Shear Serrated Edge Forstner Drill Bit Set 1/4-Inch to 2-1/8-Inch, Multi, One Size [amazon.com]

Definitely still not cheap but supposedly just as good as the Fisch Wave Cutter set, which are much more expensive.

In light of all the fakes I've gotten, I'm done ordering anything name brand from Amazon. They shipped me a fake specialty tape measure a year ago. It wasn't even in the units it was supposed to be in. But the part numbers matched, so Amazon sold it.

Freud is good stuff. Their Forstner an router bits are worth a hefty premium. But no way I'd pay the 'Zon a penny more than I would for a Harbor Freight special, 'cause there's a good chance that's what they'll send you. Bauer bits painted red.
Almost all of amazon is some sort of counterfeit/duplicate these days.

Don't want to pay $50 for a set of authentic Jorgensen clamps? That's ok, you can get an almost exact replica made by chinese supplier XUNANCY for $12 shipped (and don't forget to select the $5 coupon with it).

Think you're getting a new in box 1TB Western Digital blue hard drive? Nope, you got a shucked drive from an external hard drive enclosure and it was still sold by amazon. Need to get it covered under their warranty after 11 months of use? Nope, your warranty is now null and void because the serial number doesn't match the purchased item.

//ask me how I know all of this.

By the way, Freud 16pcs drill bit set for $175 does sound very legit, i'd just inspect it fully and make sure it is legit before you go using them.

Amazon stopped comingling a couple years back due to counterfeit electronics.
i want this to be true but i'd honestly have to see it to believe it. it just seems like a monumental task to bin everything by seller.

When you say "inspect it fully", do you happen to know what to look for on a counterfeit vs legit product like this? I don't know if companies like Freud put any measures in place to make their products stand out from copies...
I mean for anything you buy. Not sure how you'd do that with drill bits unless you had a hardness tester or something but in general you should do your due diligence to identify anything that would make you suspect it's a counterfeit item.

I never heard of that. How do you know that to be the case? Just curious.

I once bought Sonicare brush heads sold and fulfilled by Amazon and what I received was an obvious counterfeit.

How does this compare to the Diablo 16-piece forstner set:

Freud and Diablo are the same company (or at least owned by the same parent company). The two model numbers appear identical (pb-100 vs. fb-100).

Acme is offering 25% off making the price $169 before tax. I'd buy from Acme.

When I looked at the pics, it appeared that the FB was non-serrated and PB was serrated. Hard to tell though.

I don't know, after watching Wile E. Coyote getting all those faulty explosives from Acme I'd be hesitant to buy from them.

Literally bought a electronic textbook "Direct from Amazon", but came from commingled inventory. Paid a premium over third party sellers just to avoid such an event.

It was a counterfeit book -- the author had "Signs you've been sold a counterfeit" page on his website, and I had to reference that with the SCAMazon rep to "justify" my return request.

They told me directly "oh we have a shared inventory, so we can ship products faster". But apparently, they do zero checking if they're legit. So they have a contaminated inventory of legit and fake items. And they're the ones to benefit from not doing any verification, so...conflict of interest anyone?

I returned the book and bought it from a electronics manufacturer in NYC that was listed by the author as being a legit reseller. Paid full MSRP, but WOAH HEY I GOT A REAL PRODUCT. Saving 10% isn't worth the hassle.

I'd rather go with Fisch wave cutter bits. They're great bits. If you're just starting out I would just buy the bits I need, because half of the bits you'll never use.

Dang, those are like 40% more expensive than Freud.

Are they that much better?

Lifetime or not?

Regular Use

If you plan on using these on a regular basis and you can easily afford it, I would say get it - Frued is a great brand.. I use a lot of their stuff.

Occasional Use
Will you use it maybe a few times a year but still want good quality? This is not for you, you will be at a net loss in the end. Buy something mid ranged.

People stuck in the middle class wonder why they're stuck there. One reason is falling for the idea that you must get what armchair experts on the internet tell you to get.. like getting all premium bits for example. Even Adam Savage that's a strong believer in buying tools to last a lifetime knows when to call it if he only rarely uses something.. he has cheap Chinese bits. He does high level projects most of us wont get anywhere close to.

I have mostly Frued and Whiteside bits/blades. I like premium products - if I use them on a somewhat regular basis - I'm okay with the cost but again do what matches your income, not what people online tell you - you should get. I just know there's going to be people buying these when in reality they should look closer to Chinese brands from Harbor Freight.

I have a set of the harbor freight forstner bits. They barely cut anything, they're almost useless. I'm not exaggerating.

The freud bits i have are basically the cheapest bits you should buy if you actually want working bits, even for just a single project.

Forstner bits aren't why people aren't rich. Stagnating wages over the last 40 years is why. This feels like an avocado toast millennials rant

The wave cut will give you a much cleaner cut than the sawtooth cut, they just don't cut quite as fast. The point of forstner bits is to make a very clean cut, so I'd rather give up a little speed of cut for a cleaner cut.

You can get the set of Fisch bits for less, but I wouldn't bother buying a whole set unless you're sure you need them, I would just buy the few sizes you'll use most. Or buy a cheap set and replace the ones you use with good ones.
