I'll add my 2 cents to counter the criticisms for this phone. I got the 6a for $299 from the deal a couple weeks ago. I haven't had any over heating, battery lasts all day, apps open snappy, and photos are vastly better than my old Moto G Power. The fingerprint sensor worked fine before I put a tempered glass screen protector on it. Now it works about half the time on the first touch, but I'm okay with that given I could remove the screen protector if I thought it was a problem. I think a lot of folks are trying to compare this phone to a flagship. At this price point, it compares to motorola and other lower end phones, and quite frankly it beats them in almost every respect.

I upgraded to this from my 3A XL and I am somewhat disappointed. Phone gets overheated often, battery life seem to suck and getting used to the fingerprint reader on the screen.

Pixel 1/1 XL has unlimited original quality photo backup.

Pixel 2-5 has unlimited reduced quality photo backup.

Any pixel after 5 will NOT have free photo backup - anything uploaded from such Pixel phones will occupy the 15GB shared space with Google Photo/Gmail/Google Drive.

Had the 6a for about a week, okay phone, battery life was about what I expected for the price. Struggled getting my thumbprint added, did the updates to Android 13 and the phone was much better, but still struggled with fingerprint reader. Decided to return it for the 6, immediately updated to 13, then another update dated September 5. Fingerprint reader took my thumb like a champ and was so much better than what I experienced on the 6a. To be fair, I didn't try the fingerprint reader on the 6 before the updates, but I'm guessing the September update really fixed it. I've only had it a few days, but I think the battery life may also have improved.

Because of the machine learning the first week of use on any of the Pixel 6 models is terrible. The phone is trying to learn what is important and how you use your phone so it can work efficiently. What I have heard for the 6 and 6 Pro is to turn off 5G because the phone wastes so much energy trying to find signal. The 6a is missing 5 bands that the 6 and 6 Pro have. I have read reviews where users have tried to turn off 5G but for some reason they lost some 4G bands and had no signal. Not sure if anyone else tried turning off 5G to see if it helps with battery or if they lost other bands.

A balanced view: phone is solid, but probably not worth the upgrade, even from a 3a. Fingerprint sensor is as good/bad as any other non ultrasonic sensor. Battery life is fine, but likely worse than a 3a with a fresh battery. You won't get a full day out of heavy use. On an esim in Europe, the phone lasted about 12 hours of photos + Google maps, not great. Main camera is literally exactly the same; do not expect any improvement over the 3a or any other Google phone. I've done side by side tests, and it's literally the same. Wide angle is decent, but nothing compared to a good wide angle lens, even an S20. I bought it for 4 reasons: my battery was dead, I wanted some water resistance, I didn't have 5g, and I wanted a wide angle lens. It delivers fine on those, but it nowhere near blows me away like the 3a did. It's adequate as everything else just feels the exact same (though no headphone jack sucks).

My two cents on overheating, Pixels hate to be in full bodied cases. My 3 and 5a both suffer "phone is too hot" often enough with heavy usage. Tons of pictures being taken, video being shot, large game being played, etc. Day to day normal usage never had an issue and battery life was/is great on both models. But the overheating problem(s) seems to be an issue with the Pixel series from my experience.

I think that holds true for all new phones compared to previous generations. iphone 14 just came out, only marginal upgrades over the 13 which was only marginal upgrades over the 12

Just bought the 6a about 3 weeks ago from T-Mobile for full price. I wonder if T-mobile will price match. I agree with some of the criticisms... overheating, fingerprint sensor, battery life. My Pixel 4a 5g was way better in all these areas and paid only $299. If I can get the price reduced, I'll keep it and hope Google fixes these issues with updates.
