Hi @460x

"You're looking for a business-class security camera for real security uses .. "
"You're very focused on low light, and nothing else"

I completely disagree .. I am looking for a HOME class security camera system that can perform. Reolink fails in many ways to do that for me and others.

Low light performance is just one of the key items .. compatibility is another. If Reolink was more compatible I could add them to my setup for spots which a cheap camera is OK, .. however Reolink does not play well with other kits ( see the mentioned iFrame issue )

" .. and I suspect many here looking at cheap cameras to look at their house .. "

Most people, myself included, have NOT A CLUE about evaluating security cameras when we were / are new to the topic. We're seen too many Hollywood movies to have a realistic expectation .. ( and there are a lot of shill videos on youtube .. )

People look at Reolink or other Security Cameras because they see they have a particular need to meet.

I've learned a lot since people ( some here at SDs ) recommended products to me which failed to do what I needed to. ( got a box of old cameras to show that .. hint .. this is why I really like Costco's return policy .. )

My first big post covers that .. ( see the original Lorex post I mentioned previously ).

There's a massive amount of deceptive and fraudulent messaging from Reolink ( purposeful social media astroturfing and manipulation .. ) and their fan base.

I've seen numerous posts here, there, and elsewhere stating Reolink is great at image capture even in low light conditions.

Now, to likened Reolink with a Hi-point Pistol is fair .. IF you can afford a better pistol .. you would want to buy it. If you recommend friends, family, and others that the Hi-Point is the greatest pistol around .. well that is just misleading and / or fraudulent.

To state Reolink has issues .. but the low price meets many people's budgetary needs, is fair.

To state Reolink is poor for image capture .. but you love the app and price point .. that's fine.
I can copy and paste your reply with the exact opposite which makes us neither right or wrong, just difference needs and experiences.. how Reolink performs well in many ways for me and others, that many people do have a clue and looking for advanced options as many many many other cameras don't offer and would appreciate too (like setting i-frame intervals now), that a poor App experience can make an even great camera thrown in a box. I'm pointing out my own experience ..I never said how it performs in low-light but fair point to call it out for those that finds that a priority. I do not, and I also didn't want a force cloud-based/subscription based service. And many YouTube reviews shows image capture/clarity during the day from Reolink 4k cameras to be very very good - and while I have installed several myself, I can confirm what I see on certain youtube is fair and why I settled on them as I find the compression to be the least so far leaving a clear image, so to say it's image quality is poor is deceptive since you only mean night-time.

So spill the beans, what cameras meet your standards to capture these bad guys?

btw, what's your setup? I run them in stand-alone mode, but know Reolink can connect to a slew of systems:
Blue Iris [reolink.com]
Synology [reolink.com]
QNAP [reolink.com]
SecuritySpy [reolink.com]
iSpy [reolink.com]
Geovision VMS [reolink.com]
Milestone XProtect [reolink.com]
etc

As I noted, my core system is a wired IP PoE setup with various cameras which are isolated from the internet and augmented with a few cloud dependent cameras for internet viewing. ( vs LAN viewing ) - this makes it easier for me to keep a secure home LAN. Less work for me to deal with security issues.

Reolink does not work well with others even though it is claimed due to tricks Reolink does on the firmware .. iFrame for example is need to detect motion in some VMS systems like Blue Iris .. ( note, documented better at ipcamtalk .. )

FYI - numerous more detailed posts at ipcamtalk on the topic of Reolink..

Here's my original thread on the topic here from 2017 .. ( note, older kit there .. but much of the info in the wiki applies .. DORI for example )
https://slickdeals.net/e/10409612-lorex-dahua-oem-6x-4k-8mp-security-camera-system-w-8-port-poe-ip-nvr-2tb-hdd-kit-at-costco-b-m-ymmv-for-799-99

Here's an example of another attempt at me looking for good quality night time image captures on a Reolink camera ..

The reviewer states: " .. again great detail perfect image.. " - when imho it is anything but a great image capture .. this is just an example once again of the deceptive youtube videos on this topic .. ( note, you can see similar issues with other brands, not just Reolink .. )

Luckily this SD includes the DVR so most may not care about using their own systems until it outgrows their need, but point taken if iFrame is important to work in 3rd party systems. Was this tested in the past year when I saw, for example the RLC-822A firmware get this feature to be adjusted?

But this is getting off topic ..Reolink is great and everything I said is still true and not proven otherwise except for poorer night video which for any brand will equally be compared to a camera costing twice as much I suspect you'll say is better. So, what cameras you're recommending as I would love to find some examples online comparing the two as I have my doubts that even a 1/1.8" vs 1/2.x" can make a big difference in a very challenging condition.

Yes, I went with PoE as well for best reliability to avoid battery-life issues and wifi connection issues that I find most negative reviews is usually the cause of. Currently reading the link you posted, a great resource indeed.

NVR .. kit includes an NVR ..

and yes .. it does matter .. as it means you can not easily add better cameras to a Reolink system, unlike say a Dahua OEM or Hikvision OEM system.

Post your low light image captures .. otherwise Reolink is 100% not great as can be measured by various metrics.

FYI - those new to security cameras .. if you need good low light performance look for cameras that have larger sensors ( in general .. of course there's more nuance to this, but that is a good rule .. )

So far all the Reolink cameras I have seen use more affordable and smaller sensors and do not do well in low light conditions
Mat!!! I was trying to remember your name... I'm looking at an install, people at IPC forum basically said the same thing. Looks like there's an 8MP camera that has a largish sensor, but can't seem to find an installer that'd use that.

Bottom line is diy or "use our camera".

Hi Thedealguy79

imho Just about any proper POE system will be better in low light than what I have seen of Reolink ..

Reolink really is the king of the most affordable IP PoE cameras .. they're not fully compatible to specs, and you can see that when you need iframes to work well ( reports that some models with some firmware may fix this .. depends on the model .. )

Right now, I believe the best value / performance is getting a used business class PC running a VMS ( like Blue Iris ) and a good PoE switch ( perhaps a used HP Pro Curve ) and picking either Hikvision OEM and / or Dahua OEM cameras for each position you need covered.

For example, you may only need 2-3 good low light cameras covering the front of your house, and be ok with more affordable cameras covering the backyard and side of the house ..

I know: "oh man .. can't I just pull out my credit card and pay less for solving this check box .. " just does not work well in this case.

If you are new to this, I highly recommend just getting one decent 4MP 1/1.8" varifocal camera and a long cat5e/cat6 cable and small poe switch and learning more and seeing what positions you want to cover.

Once you know more you can keep that good camera and use it in the most critical spot and buy more affordable cameras in other spot.
appreciate the info. since posting this, did some research and ended up on one of the forums. going to be ordering a used PC this week and install BI on it, then buy the POE switch and start getting wired up. seems to be the best way forward. going to get one camera with variable focus length to test out in all the areas i need, then starting buying specific cameras w/ fixed focal lengths in each area i need. more work, but will end up with a much better system. and yes, been looking at the 1/1.8" cameras with the starlink (i think thats the name).

glad to see the expert reinforcing my plan! worship

You keep pointing out your criteria for a good camera as the end all, and unless it has great low light, it's a horrible camera for everyone. It's a horrible camera for you looking for a security camera to capture bad guys but not for many who have higher priorities when evaluating cameras than low-light ....educate me by stop avoiding the question of what camera is good in your opinion. You're not as helpful or clever as you think by quoting everything as if somehow you uncovered something or enlighten me. Contribute by helping others as I have tried with sharing my experience, not criticizing without suggestions to actually help and move the conversation forward.

It's great by my various metrics when working with Lorex, Arlo, Dlink, Reolink, Eufy and Ring.

You're clearly knowledgeable / work in the security industry so you likely look down on consumer cameras for your own home as you know the limitations, and your ultimate recommendation will be a camera that's 3-4x times the price which would be obviously better with its larger sensor but would love to know what cameras passes Mat2000's challenge with equally or better day time video and much better night video. But it's like I'm looking buy a sports car and you're saying it's horrible off roads so it's a terrible car.

Hi armedmetallica

Yes, a lot of "security camera installers" are in the business of selling smaller sensor cameras at a 30%+ markup to customers.

Many US distributors of cameras do not carry a good selection of cameras that Hikvision and Dahua make, and often charge more than most of us want to pay.

You will certainly need to just have someone run the cabling for you in as professional as a manner as possible and either DIY install the cameras and kit, or hire them to do it.

If you are able bodies and willing to pay attention to details, many of us can do a decent DIY cabling job.

You can look for low voltage cabling / security alarm wire installers, they are often fairly good at their jobs and are not in the business to sell cameras.

Reolink is the Yugo of cars ..

"It's great by my various metrics when working with Lorex, Arlo, Dlink, Reolink, Eufy and Ring."

Great, post the comparisons and models.

Lorex makes a ton of models .. some definitely do much better than any Reolink. ( honestly, probably most of the Lorex IP POE cameras in the last few years will outdo Reolink in low light image capture .. )

I'm not trying to convince you, nor the police, that Reolink is a great option for you as your priorities and budget are very different.

IPCamTalk is a great place I've known for years too, but repeating that smaller sensor produces worse low light shots over larger sensors is nothing new - this has been known since photography was first invented.

Your examples are all about low-light shots, this YouTuber [youtu.be]repeats Reolink does great at day-time - even compared to much pricier options which is not totally unexpected - which is exactly what I'm looking for in the 1/2.x" sensor size / budget price range. I know he's one of your fav YouTubers, lol, but his and other reviewers all show day time footage to be quite good for cameras in the same price range - and my personal experience matches those compared to the consumer brands names I've mentioned.

My only take away is - a confirmation that Reolink is a great option for those not looking to spend more knowing low-light conditions is funny ghosts for the kids to watch. You have ignored my questions about what's a recommended camera at these similar price points which means there is none. The only option is to spend more, but wanted to see how many times you would ignore the challenge.

For budgets and situations that require low-light, I usually consider 1/1.8" sensor for a 4K camera, like the Hikvision ColorVu cameras, as my base. I think I'll go and buy Reolink's new poe doorbell now..

Hi 460X ..

Reolink has many fans which fail repeatedly to be honest about the quality of Reolink products, anyone who states Reolink are great without adding the appropriate qualifiers will be misleading others.

If you need a cheap kit, and are find with the limited selection of camera models from Reolink, and only need daytime image capture ..

As I noted, Lorex has cameras which out perform Reolink .. Lorex used to sell Dahua OEM 8MP 1/1.8" sensor cameras are reasonable deals - even Costco had a set. Unfortunately I do not see larger sensors anymore in their line up.

A big part of all this is that consumer get fooled by the more pixels and cheap = best. When that is clearly not the case for many scenerios.

The question people need to ask .. is low light performance important for you?
Do you need to watch your driveway at night? Your mailbox on the street? Your cars parked on the street?

For many of us the answer is YES.

Sometimes you can get away with just 1-2 good low light cameras and cheap cameras covering the other views .. again this is why Hikvision / Dahua OEM and others which better meet specs are good and you can easily mix and match better cameras with more affordable cameras in your kit.

Happy customers is a bad thing? "Fans" of your products is a bad thing? Doesn't that mean they're happy? ..these are customers, not professional reviewers. To us, it's great for our needs and budget. That is honest. We buy one and if it meets our expectations, we're happy. If it exceeds, we're fans. If not, we return and asks what's now better at...XYZ.

Appropriate qualifiers? ..again, these are customers, not professionals, nor does anyone need to prove their opinion or owe proof unless at IPCamTalk where that's the expectations and why many go there. Opinions with disclaimers? Low-light shots are "amazing" by some on far worse cameras than Reolink, and far more horrible at day-time video. Reolink is better imo than the others I've personally tried - that's my opinion based on that experience. You're simply stating there's a better option out there but at a far higher price point. There's always going to be better but you're ignoring customer's needs and budgets. Know thy customers. As you said, sometimes there's outliers where there's a better camera within the budget of worse cameras... that was a worthy contribution otherwise there's none found in the last dozen posts.

Perhaps this is where the market disagrees with you - cheap cameras that performs for customer's needs sells like crazy, customers are even "fans", and you think low-light performance is upmost important for this crowd. It's clearly not otherwise returns would be common. For people like yourself with higher standards and higher budgets, you'll look for better and it's no surprise you land on the business class cameras. Not for customers looking at sub-$100 cameras who want to see their kids, dog, etc. Some even spend $30, i can only imagine how bad those are. You should have left it at your first post but had to come up with a challenge to put down people and still in shock you found a person who just happen to not care about low-light video yet knows the limitation and still choose to keep it, and irks you that I'm actually happy with it. Your challenge remains outstanding: showing us a better camera than Reolink at this SD price point.

Thoughts on this video comparison in low-light? https://youtu.be/gkpf9qc2V9M?t=440
