Project Farm test results weren't kind to these wet filters, with the exception of 'race day' use. 😉
this.
99% of the people that use kn filters dont clean and oil them every year. you're just causing damage to your maf and throttle body
You want to feel the "gains" of an air filter? Stick with oem and clean your MAF sensor.

Yea, why would I buy a reusable performance air filter for $50 that will last the entire life of the car when I can instead pay $50 for an OEM air filter every time it needs to be changed. Stop talking.
For most cars, paper filters are like $8-$20. You might save a hundred bucks over the course of a decade, but you can't be sure that the extra material getting into your engine isn't reducing the life of the vehicle or to what extent.

All these statements of "I've used these filters for years and my car car still runs!" are essentially meaningless. You'd want to run different filters types through thousands of vehicles and test the difference of mean time to failure. Without that data is hard to say anything specific.

You can say, though, that these filters offer their claimed 'benefits' by filtering less particulate matter. Businesses like airlines recognize that they have higher repair costs and shorter service intervals when they operate in deserts due to dust and dirt. So why would I want to use something that's going to essentially simulate the conditions of a harsher environment for one of my most valuable assets? When would the extra cost of paper filters be worth the cost? If your car ran for another 5k miles would you buy paper filters? 10k? 2k?

It seems to me that there's very little possible gain to buying a K&N and a lot of possible downsides, especially when my long term savings are in the $100 range.

I'll be that guy:

Made in USA, i'll take 10, oh wait, Youtub video says it's crap. i guess i'll pass? Big Grin

all joking aside, used it since the 90's as well as all other different air filters. all the cars/trucks/suv's i owned lasted 150k+ miles without any issues. I don't think air filters matters as much as oil changes and other important maintenance items. Peace

If you have ever watched ProjectFarm or know ProjectFarm is at all, you would know to only use WIX filters.

We use them on race cars and some turbo applications but these engines typically do not see high mileage so they will not suffer from the added particles in the oil. I used to use them on daily drivers and one could noticeably see the dirty oil vs stock paper filter after 5000 miles.
I have an older project car with a supercharger that may see 100 miles a year. I use a KN, for the increase in airflow but also because it's pipe end cone style at the end of inlet pipe in the lower part of the fender. No place for an air box and standard filter in that car anyway and the KN is cheap. All other cars I have an OEM style paper filter.

All for the same reasons you mention

You have to spend money also on the "filter cleaning kit" which is like $22, add that to the price and it's not really a good deal if it's your daily driver, specially if it uses 2 filters at the same time like mine does.

Never had a problem with K&N. Been using it for years in my 2010 jeep GC and 2007 Mustang GT. No problems but honestly I never thought about how much oil to use. From reading the posts I have been doing it wrong; in the same day washing it, letting it dry, and over oiling. Still no problems but I need to learn how properly clean them (usually do it once per year or say 5k).

This, this, and more of this needs to be read by those claiming savings vs paper.
