All these statements of "I've used these filters for years and my car car still runs!" are essentially meaningless. You'd want to run different filters types through thousands of vehicles and test the difference of mean time to failure. Without that data is hard to say anything specific.
You can say, though, that these filters offer their claimed 'benefits' by filtering less particulate matter. Businesses like airlines recognize that they have higher repair costs and shorter service intervals when they operate in deserts due to dust and dirt. So why would I want to use something that's going to essentially simulate the conditions of a harsher environment for one of my most valuable assets? When would the extra cost of paper filters be worth the cost? If your car ran for another 5k miles would you buy paper filters? 10k? 2k?
It seems to me that there's very little possible gain to buying a K&N and a lot of possible downsides, especially when my long term savings are in the $100 range.
Made in USA, i'll take 10, oh wait, Youtub video says it's crap. i guess i'll pass?
all joking aside, used it since the 90's as well as all other different air filters. all the cars/trucks/suv's i owned lasted 150k+ miles without any issues. I don't think air filters matters as much as oil changes and other important maintenance items.
We use them on race cars and some turbo applications but these engines typically do not see high mileage so they will not suffer from the added particles in the oil. I used to use them on daily drivers and one could noticeably see the dirty oil vs stock paper filter after 5000 miles.
All for the same reasons you mention
