Here is another bike on clearance for $98 free s/h (was 398).

Men's 27.5" Decathlon ST100 [walmart.com]

I realize this is not the same level of the original post but good deal for a bike.

LOL at thumbs down. Some people will down anything…

"You've saved $10 with WOWFRESH promo code"

Amex Everyday Bluecash supposedly 3% for online orders, YMMV if this counts for pickup...

In for one. I bought a bike for $20 that needed work yesterday....so that's backburner now LOL.

What rider height is this good for?

Nevermind, I found the size chart. 5'10"-6'1"
depends a bit more on leg length more than overall height. I'm 5'11 but I get slightly larger frames because I am more legs than torso.

Is this not usable on road at all? Just wondering if it can be used around the neighborhood and some simple trails?
Mountain bikes need to be sturdier and have things like really good shocks and breaks to handle the type of riding they can be used for. Road bikes typically try to be as energy efficient as possible and lighter so you can get more distance for the effort. You can take a mountain bike on the road, even a long road, it will just be a less efficient relative to a road bike. You can't really take a road bike on a trail or without risking safety and damaging the bike.

There's a subreddit called r/budgetbikeriders with a lot of Axum builds. Mine is almost fully upgraded - boost manitou markhour air fork with remote lockout, trp front brake soon to be deore XT, Duroch 36 mm boost wheel with 29x3.0 DHF front tire and 29x2.4 DHR rear tire, PNW dropper post, Raceface Chester pedals, IXF crank and 34t oval chainring, AdventX clutch derailleur, e13 35 mm bar with 70 mm stem, rock bro handlebar grips. Handles bike park and black trails easily - but I kinda regret going with super grippy tires and longer boost fork (slackened my head tube angle to 65 degrees from stock 67.8 degrees) as the Axum stock climbs fast and has decent, fast rolling XC tires (I'm thinking of putting them back on). My last upgrades will be a lighter rear wheel as the stock wheels are heavy (30 mm inner diameter no-name hub) and increasing fork travel to 120 mm.

What's the first thing to upgrade?
I'm thinking pedals and forks

Pedals and yeah an air fork. A cheap decent one is the suntour epixon can be had for less than $200 on Aliexpress. The Manitou Markhor is one step up though for $50-100 more and you can also find a Rockshox recon for around that price (I have both and the Markhor is better).

Nice deal. Hopefully the medium size will go on sale too.

If you own any mountain bikes, I'd suggest going to your local bike trails and try the green trails, it so much fun than riding on flats/pavements and a real workout.. Just always wear a helmet

Unfortunately, once you get into it, then you will want to get those "real" mountain bikes.

Are these fork options more or less drop in replacements or do they require some modifications?

This was on my list of bikes about a month ago

Framed rendal (camping world) $125
Kent trouvaille $398
Schwin axum
Trek marlin at 15% off

Main use is riding with my kids and light trails, I bought the framed bike and love it. I really liked the kent in store while sitting on it, very comfortable. The tires were tad wide for what I like and how I would use it. May eventually upgrade in the future pending how much I ride. The axum at this price is tempting for an extra bike that wouldnt be used much

I'd say the cheap bottom bracket. For less than $20 you can put in a nice sealed Shimano UN300.

Second, nice set of MT200 Shimano brakes. (Less than $70).

Great features for the price. Average $500 for these features.

Lol.

"You may be used to choosing a bike size based on standover height or seat tube length. While those measurements are still worth considering,"

Yes, let's "consider" what happens to a set of balls crashing into a top bar on a bike because you suddenly found yourself in a situation where you have to straddle the top bar with both feet on the ground but didn't "worry" about the height of the top bar/stand over height of the bike you bought because norcal007 (that you, Bond? 😂) said the height of that bar "means little" and "Nobody worries" about that possibility until they damage their scrotum. Ouch!!

And if you are "concerned" about the stand over height of a bike then you must not be a real "trail rider" and aren't allowed to buy a bike with the world "mountain" in it's description 😂😂😂
You left out this part: "it's more important to look at the Reach and Effective Top Tube measurements when comparing mountain bike sizes". But you would know that if you actually rode trails.
