Here is another bike on clearance for $98 free s/h (was 398).

Men's 27.5" Decathlon ST100 [walmart.com]

I realize this is not the same level of the original post but good deal for a bike.

LOL at thumbs down. Some people will down anything…

"You've saved $10 with WOWFRESH promo code"

Amex Everyday Bluecash supposedly 3% for online orders, YMMV if this counts for pickup...

In for one. I bought a bike for $20 that needed work yesterday....so that's backburner now LOL.

Tried to use the "Find your size" tool on that and when I put MTB, my 6'2" height and my 31" inseam, it just says "are you sure? Please double-check your measurements".

For the price, I bought this and going to pick it up after work today. If it doesn't seem like a comfortable fit, I'll return it. I really don't need this much bike, it'll be on surface streets, some concrete bike trails and a gravel trail, mostly flat riding or very gentle hills. Just mainly to get some cardio in or running light errands like getting groceries. Really probably could have gotten the $98 one that people have referenced.

I'd say the cheap bottom bracket. For less than $20 you can put in a nice sealed Shimano UN300.

Second, nice set of MT200 Shimano brakes. (Less than $70).
Those seem like some really nice upgrades. What benefit does the bottom bracket bring? I understand the brakes will turn from mechanical from hydraulic.

Whats a good but budget helmet to get with this?

So you have a long torso and arms. This is why the top tube measurement is important. You might be able to move the seat back as far as possible and maybe go with a shorter stem if needed to give your more room/reach. For your type of riding this bike should work well.

This is helpful, thanks. I'm actually kind of an electric scooter enthusiast, but thought I'd start doing some biking for a little more exercise. I went into my local bike shop and explained my needs and she strongly advised me to wait until I had $400 or $500 to spend on a decent entry level bike, but then I saw this and it kept nagging at me that I at least have to try this one out. I feel like it will meet my need for half the cost. I'm also a big guy at 280lbs and this looked like a stockier bike. Not that it is necessarily, but for some reason that was oddly comforting.

For the best "budget" and not cheep, unfortunately you just going to have to look for what is on sale and what is available.

But the Specialized Align II is probably one of the best "budget" helmets out there ($55 typical $40 when on sale)

Virginia tech bike helmet rates are the best way to check the actual protection level of a helmet

You left out this part: "it's more important to look at the Reach and Effective Top Tube measurements when comparing mountain bike sizes". But you would know that if you actually rode trails.
Lol. Tell that the guy who didn't consider stand over height as a highly important factor when he bought his bike and just damaged his scrotum because he was suddenly in a situation where he needed to plant both feet on the ground, and is on the way to the ER!
You can hold his hand in the ambulance and assure him that at least he had the proper reach to his handlebars! THAT'S what's most important πŸ‘πŸΌ He is a TRUE trail rider, so stand (or lie on a gurney) with pride!! πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Those DON'T MATTER if you can't stand over the bike in the first place πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I had an Axum, you really need to be mechanically inclined for this bike, I had to take it apart and put it back together to get everything working perfectly. Ended up returning it when I got a good deal on a used bike, but that one is now fully upgraded and need a new "beater" that I would not care if it was stolen so I'm getting another one. Wave
Walmart assemblers are not really bike mechanics. When bikes come in the box, they put the handlebare, wheels, pedals and seat on. They might do a brief brake adjustment and brief gear adjustment, but the gears are usually done at the factory. However, during shipping the derailleur can sometimes get hit on the side of the box and be taken out of alignment.

Dicks sporting goods does a better job of bike delivery with a half decent mechanic that checks it over during delivery. But even then, I had a bike that I could never get to shift perfect from here.

Bike shops do the best job and make sure it's perfect before you leave. The components of the bikes are also much higher quality, so they're expected to always shift and brake well.

As a motorcycle rider, this is not true at all. You can easily lean to 1 side and put 1 foot down while holding up 400+lbs of motorcycle. So you should be able to do that with a bike as well.

Many mountain bike riders want longer travel suspensions and higher bottom bracket heights for trails. You don't need to flat foot on the ground.

Considering the Axum is not for hardcore trail riders like that. Most likely for commuters and light trail riding. I'd say seat tube length is also important, along with reach and top tube length. I like my legs to be the proper length for pedaling.

Yes. I'm aware that you can put one foot down and stabilize most 2 wheel vehicles. I'm talking about situations where you suddenly need to plant both feet down unexpectedly without either crushing your junk and falling over. That could happen on a trail or just riding through the parking lot to the trail.
The height of a top bar (stand over height) does not affect the ability to set your seat and handlebar heights properly. I'm NOT talking about sitting on a seat and touching both feet to the ground.

The the Axum is a budget hardtail trail bike. Not a "commuter" bike. The two issues with it are the petals are crap, but most mount bike don't even have them and the bottom bracket will not last, but even on bike store bikes the bearings are considered consumables. And I betting the bottom bracket would last at lot longer if people learn how to repack the bearings.

Or you can just open and repack the existing bracket. Even sealed ones get trashed after a year in the mud and water. Were I ride, the gravel dust destroys bottom brackets.

Are these fork options more or less drop in replacements or do they require some modifications?
They are "drop in" but installing a bike fork is defiantly not just a bolt on upgrade. Your looking at headsets, cutting the tube and star nuts

They shipped me a medium. For me that is going to work out as my kid outgrew his small Rockhopper. Oh well, ordering the Hydraulic brakes NOW.
