If there's an option to pay directly through eBay and not paypal I'd recommend doing that to be safe. Most of the times these offers rely on being automatically triggered so if the charge shows as paypal it might not trigger or even qualify, even if it's for a ebay transaction.

Worked well for me. I needed an obscure battery that was selling for $40 on Amazon. An eBay seller had it for $15.99. Fortunately I remembered to get out of PayPal and use the Amex card directly. I had the offer on Blue Cash and Cash Magnet.

As soon as the purchase went through I received an email from Amex saying congratulations you redeemed the offer.

Doesn't matter -- Amex only cares about the final amount charged to card

Pay directly with Amex -- don't use PayPal

is this a one time thing? I swear I thought the terms said up to 2 times. Maybe it was a different offer I am recalling. I was able to use it, but it only worked once. The second purchase didn't get a $5 credit

Me too. I double check my AMEX account before I made my ebay purchase. Check after the purchase and the $5 credit was gone. Never got the $5 applied
