About this item:
Captures up to 4k at 60fps, Outputs up to 1080p at 30fps
All of the similar devices under the $30 range use the same chipset, and it worked way better than I was figuring back when these first started showing up.
Some notes:
- Shows up on the PC (Win) as a normal video device, no other drivers needed
- Can spit out 1280*720 @ 60fps max, 1920*1080 will max out at 30fps
- If you're wanting to capture live gameplay from a console/etc, you're probably going to want an HDMI splitter, in order to split to the capture dongle and a monitor/tv at the same time...these devices add anywhere from 5 to 12 frames of delay between the input to the capture, and then it showing up in OBS/whatever, depending on the output res/framerate. Depending on the game type, this might be a non-issue.
-- (There are other same-guts capture devices for usually 2x more that mention having 'Loop'...they just have an internal splitter included)...and then the 'With Audio' versions also have a 3.5mm jack for injecting audio...like from a microphone)
- Audio is output in a weird way: It takes the stereo channels and interleaves them into a mono 96khz output. Grab https://github.com/ToadKing/mono-...o/releases and run it after the dongle is connected, and it will output normal 48khz stereo audio. Pressing Enter will exit the program.
- There is no actual 'USB 3.0' version. It's just blue plastic in the plug, 4 USB 2.0 pins. 'usbdeview'/'usbtreeview'/etc can quickly confirm it's a USB 2 device in Windows.
I used these during the initial lockdown to connect my DSLR to my PC as a budget Camlink. This little guy is extremely impressive for the price and even wowed YouTuber EposVox. Here's the review[youtu.be].
I haven't looked into it in a year or so, but pretty much all the devices that look like this (in this price range) scale content to 1080p and compress it. Unfortunately, they also somehow scale 1080p content, which makes it a bit blurrier than just the compression alone would.

Also I wasn't trying to say that there was anything special about mine. Rather that there are many different versions that look the same.
Sorry that you bought 7 of them without doing the research ahead of time, but then you tried to act like your 7 are the only ones in existence.
I bought 7 of them to desolder the SOCs. So why feel sorry? That makes no sense. And I've done a ton of research. I know so much more than you about these, so stop being smug. Have you seen the datasheet? No. Have you reverse engineered one? No. So maybe you should've done your research before getting scammed into paying more for the same thing and being too ashamed to admit it. I told you, I have dozens of these. Not just 7. The 7 are the "Rullz" scam company that you posted. I only bought them because buying 7 fake usb3 at that time was cheaper than buying 7 usb 2's.
But I always warn people about the false usb3 claims on all these models (including yours).

I didn't get scammed. It was only $7 on Ali Express before corona. If you don't want to believe that blog post, then the burden of proof is on you to disprove it, Mr./Mrs. Reverse Engineer. And since I bought mine so long ago, it's just another reason why I told others to be cautious when buying because who knows what they're selling nowadays. I'm not the one misguiding people. I was very clear that there are many different models and not to expect the same from all of them. Meanwhile you were saying that it didn't have the extra pins, when it clearly does, and then moving the goal posts to say that it's not "real USB 3.0" anyway which was not my claim (which was merely that there are different models with different features as corroborated by that blog post). Maybe I should have put USB 3.0 in quotes originally. Would you have been happy then? You seem really hung up on that part.

First off, you called it USB3 because you thought it was true USB3 speeds. You didn't know until a few people here told you. You even posted a picture to prove your point, only to have the picture used to debunk your claim. So, don't pretend now that "USB3 was just an identifier to differentiate it, I knew it was USB2 the whole time". You are moving the goalpost, by back pedaling your claim.
Second, you don't know how "burden of proof" works. It's the one who makes the extraordinary claim (that this is USB3) that has the burden of proof, not the doubters.
But let's go there anyway. You think that floating pins (pins clearly connected to nothing) count? Those don't exist. They could float a million pins that do nothing. There obviously must be 9 USED pins for USB3 to work. You know this, stop pretending that a fake USB3 connector does anything extra.
You are trying to mislead the people on Slickdeals. Your pride makes it so you double-down instead of admitting, "Hey, I know nothing about this" and thanking us for educating you.
And if your own posted picture of only 4 pins didn't debunk yourself... these use Macro Silicon's MS2109 (yes, I've taken apart those "models"/scammer varients, it's the same chip). The specs of this chip from the manufacturer say, "MS2109 is an HD Video Acquisition Chip, which is internally integrated with USB2.0 controller and data transceiver module, HDMI RX module, audio and video processing module."
The manufacturer specs go on to further contradict the claims on that blog you posted.

The one in that link is a $35 model with passthrough. It is not one of the under $10 adapters. I bought a bunch of different models back in the lockdown days and none under $20 had real USB 3.0 and many lied in their specs about it. Some of the > $30 ones did have 3.0 but did not look like the one pictured in this deal and even those did not perform anywhere as well as name brand capture cards. If you're linking or recommending under $10 models, don't claim they're 3.0 or different from any other unit unless you have proof.
If you want to compare to >$30 models, wait for a $40 deal on EVGA XR1 Lite and get a true 1080p60 USB 3.0 capture card with passthrough from a name brand.
Not sure if you mean composite or component (red/white vs red, green, blute). It would work if you had a composite to HDMI adapter but if you go that route, you might as well by a composite to USB adapter directly.
I picked up a pinnacle dazzle on ebay for about 15 bucks a few years back for this reason. Highly recommended
How is the quality of the captured video?
I have VHS (PAL) / Hi8 / DV tapes that I need to convert/transfer to digital in the highest possible quality and would be a bonus if there was a way to upconvert the digital video to improve the quality.

You're still getting hung up on the fake USB 3.0 port. I only said I had one with USB 3.0 that does 1080p60. If you want to be pedantic, it has a USB 3.0 plug even if it doesn't use USB 3.0. If that's your main concern, then I can understand the confusion. Whenever I get this new USB 2.0 one, I can easily prove you wrong regarding the features (or lack thereof) since you seem to just ignore the blog post explaining it (which puts it much more succinctly that your "educating" me). So if you're doing being an armchair reverse engineer, you can start by disproving the blog post that corroborates my experience rather than harping on whether or not it has USB 3.0. The important part was whether it did 1080p60, so if you notice the 2.0 models don't list it as a feature while the supposed 3.0 model does. That's it. If you want me to call it the "1080p60" model vs the "1080p30" model to make it simpler, I will do that. I only currently own the "3.0" version which is why I stated "USB 3.0 [...] 60fps" which I thought would be clear enough without getting into a debate about what port it actually has on it.
And no, I'm not the one moving the goal posts. I was uncertain the whole time especially when you consider the number of different models available. You (and the other one spouting that it doesn't have a physical USB 3.0 connector at first) were the ones being absolutist. Perhaps I shouldn't have gotten so easily baited into a tangent argument when the only important thing is what features the devices have. Although it was so easily disprovable: "there are no USB 3.0 pins!" well here's this picture showing them... "b-but they aren't connected to anything!"
You can go back and re-read my posts and see how I was trying to avoid any confusion by saying that there are multiple, similar looking models. And yet you claim that they are all identical. Even the picture I posted has two different PCBs. Different PCBs, different models that support different features, crazy...

The reason that the "USB 2" and those fake "USB 3" both cannot do 60fps is because of the chipset.
And if you read that blog, he says he THINKS its 60fps, but cannot afford the expensive equipment to verify that.
Well, guess what? I can afford it. And the data stream on ALL models are 30fps.
The ONLY reason that you (and that blogger) THINK that it is capturing 60fps is because the same specs that lie and claim to be USB3 are also saying it does 60fps. But for some crazy reason, you think the people who lied to you about USB3 would never lie to you about the framerate. I mean, what kind of liar would tell TWO lies?
Here's the bottom line. They are ALL USB2 and ALL of them do 30fps. If you think it's 60fps, thats a placebo affect from people who believe everything scammers say. If they lied and put 120hz, you'd be swearing that this is better because it does 120hz.
Take everything that the blog copied from the liar scammer specs, and throw it out the window. You bought the same product for double the price.
But the scammers lies fooled the blogger, who perpetuated the lie to you, and you are gullible perpetuating the same lie to others. And your justification is that the seller of the product and a blogger agree (yet, one just echoed the other ones lies).
The reason the USB2 ones don't list 60fps is because they are being HONEST.
The reason the scammers who lie about USB3 also added 60fps is to be DISHONEST TWICE to outsell their competition to gullible people like you.
As for the other components on the boards, they do not create the ability to add those features. Those are drop-in replacements for compatible, identical parts. Look at them. Just different manufacturers of the same value components, interchangeable with each other. The chipset is the same, though, and THAT is why they have identical features.
But now you are lying, claiming you can capture 60fps. None of these support 60fps. What if I put a USB4 connector on one and lie and say it does 240hz (but the exact same 30fps chipset with USB2 interface)? Would you fall for that, too? Maybe if I use a different brand of resistors and capacitors (same part), it'll make you think that this adds to the features?

You think a different pcb changes capabilities. If they organize functionally identical parts in a different orientation on the board, this changes them.
If you bought this "USB2" version, then now you have two functionality identical products (aside from the pride placebo that I'm sure will affect your judgement when you compare them).
Everyone else: Do not fall for the "USB3" scam or the "60fps" scam that bloggers and sellers make up to fool you.

Wow, you actually shared useful information. Thanks! You could have just started with that. And you act like these aren't all the same sellers in China. And yet you still have no proof despite talking big and saying that you own the "expensive equipment". What else are you going to BS? Were you the Chinese seller of the USB 2.0 ones the whole time?

I mean one has a crystal and one doesn't, unless you're saying it's under the heatsink (which one has and one doesn't), so no, it's not identical. And you have provided 0 pictures so hmm...

Do you even know what a crystal oscillator does? It provides timing for a CLK cycle. No electronic device can function without a crystal. Not even a watch. So then it must do 0 frames per second if it doesnt have one. You know nothing about electronics.

You can go back and re-read my posts and see how I was trying to avoid any confusion by saying that there are multiple, similar looking models. And yet you claim that they are all identical. Even the picture I posted has two different PCBs. Different PCBs, different models that support different features, crazy...
And no, I'm not the one moving the goal posts. I was uncertain the whole time especially when you consider the number of different models available. You (and the other one spouting that it doesn't have a physical USB 3.0 connector at first) were the ones being absolutist.

If you bought this "USB2" version, then now you have two functionality identical products (aside from the pride placebo that I'm sure will affect your judgement when you compare them).
Everyone else: Do not fall for the "USB3" scam or the "60fps" scam that bloggers and sellers make up to fool you.

They don't have identical components, though. Maybe we once again have different definitions of "identical" like when you said the 2.0 and "3.0" ones were identical.
