TL DR: Better to upgrade to Windows 11 if you have a clean install.

Got the laptop from the last front page deal. Added a new M2 SSD as the OS drive and left the original drive as data drive. Created an installation media on a thumb drive and installed a clean copy of Windows 10 on the M2 SSD. The machine is so fast but have tons of driver issues. It took me several days hunting down a variety of drivers and the wifi driver still would not work.

Ended up upgrading the laptop to Windows 11 after several days of pain. Had serious doubt that maybe I should have bought a similar HP laptop new at COSTCO for $600 (The Costco deal is now gone). The Costco one has very similar specs but has a 512 GB SSD already. After upgrading to Windows 11 all the driver issues are gone. The machine is now very fast with no bloatware due to the clean installation.

All HP laptops below ~600 have bad displays. However, you can get quality, 30pin 100% sRGB pannel from ebay for $90 and replace the original.

It's me who typed the above long comment, sorry if my English is bad. I am from another country and live in US on a work visa and so apologies for my bad English. I wanted to convey that this laptop comes with 1 TB Toshiba HDD (spinning) and very noisy and heat and this laptop has empty NVMe M.2 slot.

My wife has a similar HP 17" laptop from August 2021, one of the hinges already broke for normal use. Just beware of this weakness whenever you flip open the cover.

Same thing happened to my 2019 bought HP laptop earlier this month where the hinge broke and I used the Gorilla Weld 2 part Epoxy at the broken laptop hinge and it dried in 1 hour and it works perfectly even after 1 month with daily opening and closing the lis. I was about to order the entire HP lid frame panel with hinge for $50 from eBay but this $6 Gorilla Weld saved me. Try it. Only a little quantity of the epoxy mix is strong enough.

Generally true for most 17" laptop under 600 regardless of brand, with exception of this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LHR3LGK. I bought one of these just last week. "used like new" for $470. It was indeed like new, with 10 months of manufacturer warranty left. The screen is much better brightness, contrast, and colors than the model in this thread.

hdd in 2022? Come on now. As a secondary drive, great. As a boot drive, that is absolutely horrendous and I bet out of the box would perform worse than my 4th gen i7 laptop with an ssd in real world snappiness.

Got in on the earlier deal. Upgraded the hd, ram, wifi card and OS. This laptop is great for the basics (email, surfing and light gaming. Would have to spend at least twice as much for a laptop that was noticeably better.

The mechanical hard drive makes the laptop noticeably slow and gets hot. Ram is upgradeable to 64GB. The wifi card it comes with will disappoint - you can use wifi OR bluetooth, not both at the same time. Fortunately, the mb doesn't whitelist parts so you can upgrade to non-HP wifi cards. I got the Intel AX210 [newegg.com]. You can find many abuse victims talking about how they went back to Windows in the earlier thread for this laptop. I'm not into subjugation so I made mine a nix box. All the hardware was recognized out of the gate once I disabled secure boot in the BIOS.
