So from my understanding and what I've read. I should be able to install the new SSD in the laptop and then install Windows directly from a USB.
I'll update once I get around to it, but it looks like you won't have to mess with the old drive if you just want a fresh windows on a new drive.
Some may recommend Rufus to make the bootable USB.. and both do have pros and cons but if you are beginner go with the Microsoft tool.

My wife had a Lenovo that was baptized with Coke or Pepsi and fried. So I was hoping to salvage the disk as it is 500 or 750 GB instead of the 250 that came with the Acer. I need to pull it again and see what kind it is. I believe it is a M2, but do not know the format/shape.
Are people recommending this case or something else. I looked at the Sabrent that was recommended and there were a number of low rating.
Since it was relatively new I did a fresh install from thumb drive image like poster #41 in this thread mentioned. Like they mentioned I think the Windows key is tied to the Bios or motherboard or whatever.
They are a Taiwanese company just like Asus.
Yap, just get one that can take NVMe or NVMe/SATA. There are some with dual standard support. I personally like Plugable fast, reliable. Just use slices of the cooling silicon please. Those get hot with large file transfers and cooling pad is also going to preloang chips life a bit longer.

Sorry, Acronis Disk Director. Or variants from OEMs like WD, Samsung etc. They are free and not "usually" locted to the brand. So it can be used with lots of manufacturers drives. They just brand them but it's all Acronis. This way you can just clone drives directly with out losing licensing for Windows.

I bumped memory to 16gb and it runs fine. I may not ned more than 256 GB since I will have another drive in there at some time soon. But I have a larger one from a Lenovo laptop that might fit.
