Your MacBook Pro can already do lossless without any additional hardware. Just plug in some headphones. Then go into audio midi setup and increase the sample rate for your builtin audio device and enable lossless in iTunes’ settings.

This is an amplifier, not a DAC. You input analog audio via RCA cables (those white and red plugs you are familiar with) and it outputs amplified audio via the 6.35mm jack.

A DAC is what converts a digital signal into analog audio you can hear. Every single computer or device that plays digital files (like MP3s) and outputs sound via a headphone jack contains a DAC.

You probably don’t need a DAC with your MacBook Pro. It contains a very high quality onboard DAC. You probably don’t need an amp either to be honest unless you have a pair of power hungry headphones. If you do, you can easily connect this amplifier to your MacBook’s headphone port via a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

I bought a SMSL SH-6 recently, it's been awesome. Pair nicely with a Rolls MX42.

I would love for this guy to review the SH-8s like he did the SH-6:
