Unpopular opinion, but slim speakers suck. $100 speakers from the 1970s with 14" woofers will blow your mind. We've gone for style over actual sound physics. Hopefully it will swing back the other way.

I've had my eye on these speakers for a long time. From everything I've read, they seem to be one of the great bargains in audio. If only they were available in white at this price...

I was very surprised at the quality, and they punch well above their weight. You can wait on a sub if you need, they can handle it without. I've not yet heard their ES line, doubt they're worth the extra money over the original Signature Series.

Agreed. I should add I'm talking about the S60s, S20s, and S30. I've never heard the S35, only the full size S30 center. Soundbars and slim speakers may have their place but probably not my house.

True, brother has a set of JBL L100s. Hard to find that sound these days.

I went with the s35 due to space, zero complaints, but I have older towers and a sub

I will say it does its job with great clarity with dialogue in TV and movies, but you can definitely tell where it's lacking in depth when sound pans across the front 3 speakers.

My wife and I compromised on these--I got the big tower speakers I wanted, she got the S35 that fit in the tiny gap in the fireplace TV stand she owned before we got married.

The S35 sounds fine now, but it's the only speaker I've owned that really needed a break-in period. It was rough for the first month or so. I'd also recommend going into your receiver settings and pushing your center a few DB higher than your mains, even above what the receiver calibration puts it at.

If you need a skinny center, you don't have a lot of options, and none of them are really any better than this. But if you have the room for a big center, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Speaker break in is a myth. Your ears "broke in" and got used to the sound.
the soft materials inside speakers definitely change with time, but to the extent that humans can detect a noticeable difference, not much until it's broken.

it's not a myth that soft materials either harden or soften over time.

It's a shame that these days we have to rely on other people's opinions of speakers and go in blindly with a lot of $ at stake. I'm not saying there is much choice because I don't know of any hifi audio place around me except best buy magnolia and I know they usually don't have the speakers in these deals.

- Sound is very subjective. You may even like the sound on these speakers but what do you have to compare them to? You may enjoy a different pair or brand way better. On top of that, you may be biased toward your purchase: to justify the hard earned $ you spent on them and for the months you spent obsessing over them waiting for a good deal - so your time wasn't in vain. I don't know polk's return policy for deciding these don't live up to your expectations but even to consider returning an item this big is a tough decision. On top of that, a speaker's sound also depends on your room's acoustics so hypothetically even if you narrowed your selection down to 3 different sets at the (nonexistent) hifi store in your area you may find things don't sound the same in your listening room as the store but at least you'd have a better idea as to what you like.

Also, this is not an opinion on these speakers. I've never heard them.

Speaker break in is psychological. Please explain why speakers NEVER sound WORSE after the mythical break-in period. Why only BETTER? We're always hearing from audiophiles how they love FAST/TIGHT bass. Do woofers with looser parts sound faster/tighter?
I'm not saying the psychological aspect isn't involved, I'm just saying they DO change.

I've never heard a difference either. except when the rubber hardened and cracked. nod

I have measured differences though, after several months of usage. the response is different. i didn't hear it, i used a measurement mic.
