i know not everyone has a costco membership but for those that do, is that way better deal than a refurb?

Likely someone on the vendor side or Amazon didn't check the right boxes on the prop 65 forms. These are definitely compliant as I had mine shipped from Costco no problem.
Even if you get lucky with a brand new unit I still recommend getting it from Costco as you get an extra set of filters.

As for the condition, item arrived looking like and smelling new. I've set it on Auto for nearly 2 months and it works great. Occasionally it goes on high with a Red Poor Air Quality indicator after cooking; but quickly returns to virtually silent Auto Mode a few minutes after.
Also, I'd rather buy directly from Winix but honestly Woot has been good to me with quick shipping and their customer service has been excellent. Their used/refurbished items are virtually new in my experience; especially the $12 Blink X2 add on cameras they sell often. (Described as acceptable but included original box with everything looking like new; in fact the retail box was sealed)
It seems that Woot prefers to refund rather than return as well. The few times I have had issues and filed a complaint they allowed me to keep the item and fully refunded me so you can see why I can't speak ill of them...

on level 1 or 2 its barely noticeable...3 or 4 it is noticeable but i usually reserve that level for specific dust related mitigation purposes

This YouTube user [youtube.com] does this and is pretty confident that the cleaning is effective and does no damage to the filter but perhaps he is wrong?
It would be great to clean and reuse the Winix C545 filters as they are somewhat expensive to replace, especially is you have multiple air purifiers.
An air compressor seems a bit too powerful/overkill to clean filters IMO and might damage them. However, I'm hoping to find a deal on some new replacement filters in a few months before resorting to reusing them...
